Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)
ESPN ^ | October 8, 2013 | David Schoenfield

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:04:36 AM PDT by campaignPete R-CT

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.

Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....

Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."

The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.

The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.

But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.

So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.

... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...

Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.

October is not the regular season.

Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.

He ended up getting none.

Peavy was so excited last start..he's like a kid..he'll be fine on Sat

Hope Peavy reigns in his "excitement" a bit on Saturday. That's largely what caused him to implode during his last outing...

Bottom line is if Breslow didn’t self destruct, BOS most likely would have won game 2.

Multiple fielding errors had nothing to do with either team loss in the first two games.

Craig Breslow is our #2 most-trusted pitcher in the bullpen (behind our great closer Kohi Uehara). Even Manager John Farrell slipped recently during a post-game press conference and made the above statement. He then smiled, corrected himself, and said he shouldn't have said that, "I shouldn't arrange my bullpen pitchers by number", lol.

Breslow has been fantastic, but I think he has a tendency to get rattled once in awhile. Unfortunately that happened last night. He was just awful on the mound, and blew the potential 2-1 win for Lackey. Then that cringe-worthy overthrow to 3rd base, ugh! That resulted in an error to Breslow, and brought in the Cards' 4th run. And it killed momentum for the Red Sox, and knocked all the air out of Fenway Park.

GOPsterinMA is mostly referring above to trusted Breslow self-destructing on the mound last night. And that bad throw to third certainly didn't help...

Onto Game 3!

LOL What a joke.
The weak American League teams say that every year and if memory serves me the National League has won more resent World Series.
Go STL

I’m predicting a Red Sox WS win based on home field advantage. I still wish they could poach Scherzer, Verlander, and Sanchez for the series.

No news on potential managers for the Tigers yest but if they pick Ozzie Guillen I’m hanging myself. I know he has a winning record but I just don’t like that guy. I’d rather bring Trammel back and let him manage a real team.

Mike Maddux is interested in the Detroit job.

The blizzard of Oz will be probably end up a third base coach again. He did a good job during the ‘05 postseason but when the team was lousy, so was his managing. And the personality wears thin quickly when the team is losing.

this tiem of yeer, I be done with Beisbol.

Whirlled Ceres not over yet? Wake me up for game 7 after Buckner forgets about Stapleton and Gedman misses ball.

Fisk will homer in game 6, but Peavy won’t have it in game 7. Better if Lonborg comes back in game 7 on extra short rest. Lester in game 7.

I’m predicting a Red Sox WS win based on home field advantage.

The problem with that statement is that the Series is now a best-of-5, with three games IN STL.

St. Louis now has home field advantage.

Ozzie should do something he’s qualified for and should keep him and his mouth out of trouble: landscaping.

Same with Jake Peavy. Kind of “like a box of chocolates”... ya never know what you’re gonna get. ;-)
