Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.
Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....
Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."
The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.
The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.
But whats the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesnt even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.
So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.
... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.
This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...
Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.
October is not the regular season.
Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.
He ended up getting none.

MLB Network - Old Milwaukee Brewer and closer Dan Plesac said, no left hand hitter has went yard against Siegrist all year until Ortiz. Siegrist throws at 97 to 100. It was “a miracle”. Hehee.
I’m out West in CO. No NESN on the usual channels. Haven’t watched NESN since 05 when I was traveling through the area. Picked up a BO Sox game while I was around there. :-)
speaking of game 7 of 1986, is Calvin Schiraldi throwing out the first pitch tomorrow? Or maybe Oil Can Boyd?
Bob Stanley.
Are they welcome at Fenway?
Boyd admitted to be high on crack ever day in 1986.
Really?
Will it go to the backstop?
Ah, that's right... the All-Star Game win for the AL. Thanks for that reminder...
And thank you, Jim!
Yes, of course you're correct. And yes, fortunately we haven't needed him yet.
I meant to say above that we see why Dempster was never in the running to be one of the starters in the playoffs. Well, maybe he's well past his prime anyway, being age 36...
After watching post-game shows on both NESN and on the MLB Network, and listening to Red Sox player interviews, I think the reason Farrell put Dempster in tonight was so he could get a chance - and have the honor - to close out a World Series game. Farrell could have put anybody in to close the game. But he chose Ryan Dempster.
The more the merrier! We'll be back here tomorrow night... er, later tonight (Thursday).
A Red Sox fan in Colorado... there really IS a Red Sox Nation!
We've been to a few Red Sox vs. Angels games over the years at "The Big A" in Anaheim, CA. Every time almost 1/3rd of the ballpark was filled with Red Sox fans.
There are a couple of good Red Sox bars in the Los Angeles area: Sonny McLean's in Santa Monica, and Fat Face Fenner's Fishack in Hermosa Beach. Any Red Sox bars in Colorado?
Yep, Cards fan and FOX announcer Joe Buck was just saying the same when Big Papi hit his spectacular homer off Siegrist. It was a "miracle" alright... ;-)
Actually I saw most of the MLB Network’s post-game coverage tonight... it was very good.
My husband and I went on a long trip through the Midwest last summer (2012). We drove from Connecticut to Minnesota, and back again.
We did attend two games at the Toledo Mud Hens - we had a great time at those games at Fifth Third Field in Toledo! My husband has quite a baseball collection... I'm looking at several Toledo Mud Hens baseballs as I type this, lol.
Actually, if I remember correctly, we attended a day game at beautiful Comerica Park in Detroit, then - on that same day - went to a Toledo Mud Hens night game at Fifth Third Field in Toledo. Yeah, we're crazy...
I am here..ecstatic...however, all my friends here in Tampa are ignoring me..(g)..
I regularly watch the MLB network hilite program, and Harold Reynolds is lucky that ESPN forced him out over that trumped up sexual harassment accusation.. He's superb.
“Are they welcome at Fenway?”
I think so; 2004 lessened the pain.
Boyd: Another drug-induced flameout.
A “miracle”. I hope BOS sweeps, if for no other reason than that will be the end of listening to Dumb and Dumber.
I’m convinced that Buchholz doesn’t have the physical or mental “stuff” to be a true #1 or #2. He’s supposed to be BOS’s best pitcher, but when he’s needed most, IN THE WORLD SERIES, they have to put his start off for as long as they can. Schmuck.
Cherington should trade Buchholz to the NL; DH-less lineups might scare him less. The money saved should be used to resign Lester to a long term deal.
4th is the best spot for him after Lester, Lackey and Peavy.
Glad to see ya here, Ken! I was wondering where you disappeared to.
Hey, from what I've seen in Florida, most residents are fans of teams OTHER than the TB Rays. They stick with the teams they grew up with "up north" for the most part.
