Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.
Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....
Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."
The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.
The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.
But whats the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesnt even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.
So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.
... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.
This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...
Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.
October is not the regular season.
Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.
He ended up getting none.

I’m watching ‘Sunny in PHI’ and ‘The League’ starting at 11:30 on FXX.
Bird batties would like to see Dempster as the Red Sox “closer”.
Geesh, I think we can see why Dempster isn’t one of the post-season closers...
Thanks for including me! My former small rabid fan is at the Zoo, but I love this stuff!
One more out!
I meant “starters” re: Dempster
One down, three to go. I’ll say it again, if BOS wins tomorrow, I think a sweep will occur.
Chat tomorrow night.
Mauro still be tryin’ to get signatures for a recount in the MA-5 RAT primaree.
YES!!! Take THAT George Will!
There’s one! Three to go.
WOO HOO!!! Red Sox win Game 1 of the WS!
I think Farrell was going to use Dempster in long relief in the playoffs if needed. So far not needed. :-) ...as I recall.
Onto MLB Network to watch and listen to the Card excuses or the talking heads make their excuses for them. ;-)
Nice! Im watching Sunny in PHI then The League on FXX.
Possible. But what's the motive? To make the news?
“Possible. But what’s the motive? To make the news?”
Who knows. He’s a RAT after all.
Here is a fun World Series fact for everyone. The Red Sox have now beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 7 consecutive world series games in which Bob Gibson was not pitching.
Great trivia. Thanks!
Ryan Dempster sighting!!! Did he pitch in the previous rounds?
I don’t see a sweep happening but it’s worth mentioning, both modern Red Sox wins were sweeps. They haven’t lost a WS game since Game 7 in ‘86. 9 in a row now.
2009 was the only time in the last 10 years that the Game 1 winner didn’t win the series, before that 2002, before that 1996.
If you live in the NESN-coverage area, they have a good post-game show on now...
That’s correct. :-)
“Did he pitch in the previous rounds?”
No, he was napping I guess. MIA.
Swwwwweeeeeepppppp!
