Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.
Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....
Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."
The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.
The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.
But whats the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesnt even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.
So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.
... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.
This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...
Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.
October is not the regular season.
Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.
He ended up getting none.

meg, you cannot leave the game early. Stop for coffee on the Mass Pike on the way back. You will be home by 230am.
No, we most likely won't leave the game early!!
We know that stop on the Mass Pike... we usually stop there after every game. The games that start at 7pm, that is... ;-)
Well deserved, IMO!
"Wacha Wacha"... poor kid, he's going to have that nickname for the rest of his life, LOL.
Another great Polish player for the Cardinals in the tradition of Stan the Man.
If Kershaw's gonna get $200 mill after the season, what's Wacha worth?
Mattingly was way over his head as a manager. He won't be back. I'm not against inexperienced managers getting a shot.....just look at the Cards..but Donny Baseball's a goner.
Millions of Mets fans, like myself, can't reconcile this season's Beltran, who has been awesome, with the image of the Beltran who stood there, in the 9th inning of game 7 of the 2006 NLCS, against the Cards ( of all teams ) AND TOOK A FRIGGIN' THRIRD STRIKE. YOU SIMPLY CAN'T DO THAT IN THAT SITUATION.
“Is there something else big going on in Boston on Saturday night?”
Yes, it’s “Head of the Charles Regatta” weekend; it’s like an early Halloween, except everyone’s acting like a bunch of Thurston Howell wannabes. They’re easy to spot as they drive Volvos with either/or/both “Black Dog” (Martha’s Vineyard) or “ACK” (Nantucket) stickers on them.
The pretentious douchbaggery will be overbearing.
Looks like we’re going to Providence.
STL has the best farm system/organization in all of the 4 major (sorry, soccer) North American sports; they lose stars year after year, lose a HOF manager and nary skip a beat.
My deepest condolences.
It’s the first thing I thought of when I heard his name and I immediately noticed that everyone else thought of it too.
Didn’t some Muppet character say waka waka? That must be where I got it from.
They are a great organization, one of if not the best. It’s hard not to admire them. My brother really hates their guts for some reason, the City of STL that is.
Me too, I’d like to see the Sox play the Dodgers only because the Sox beat the Cardinals in 2004. Something different.
And in a few moments here we go. ...

Bogaerts at 3rd. I heard Farrell’s explanation to keep Drew in. Farrell: Drew works well with Pedroia that gives the Red Sox a strong defense up the middle, and he does not want to mess with it.
K Cabrera. K Fielder - 2 outs.
Bucholz looks sharp in the 1st.
Cabrera Ks.
Thanks! You should come up for the festivities next year.
Agreed! Your bro is sack! :)
2 on and no outs against the Tigggers. :-)
wack not sack. GD autocorrect.
