Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.
Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....
Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."
The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.
The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.
But whats the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesnt even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.
So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.
... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.
This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...
Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.
October is not the regular season.
Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.
He ended up getting none.

Not totally correct:
Obama booed loudly at Fenway Park 100th anniversary celebration in Boston
Weekly Standard - Booed at Fenway;John Kerry's pitch to Red Sox Nation was a bust.
Those Cuban super prospects are all the rage. Every club wants them so the price is high.
Could be boom or bust or anywhere in between.
Do you have any thoughts on Cuban hitter Jose Dariel Abreu? The W Sox and set to give him a 68 million dollar deal.
McCarver is a moron, I remember once a pitcher threw a simple 2 seam fastball and McCarver marveled at the “reverse slider” that pitcher seemingly invented.
I’m glad he’s retiring (from Fox at least, this is his last year thank God). Buck Jr. should join him, I can’t stand either of them. If they want to increase ratings for the WS and ALCS maybe try getting good announcers.
“Could be boom or bust or anywhere in between.”
Yep.
Well, I don’t know if I’d call McCarver a moron, but I heard he takes his pet rock out for walks.
He’s being “retired” by Fox; he’ll still have that inane “Tim McCarver Show” that comes on at ~2:00 am on Monday morning. Must-see TV.
Buck needs to stick to football; he hides his bias better there than with MLB. I remember when Dick Stockton was ‘the man’ at CBS back in the ‘80’s; he was so anti-Boston, especially anti-Celtics, you could cut it with a knife, grill it up and serve it with a side of fries. His first name serves him well.
He can hit, I can tell you that. And if the White Sox paid him $68 million for 6 years, then I assume that they think he’ll be ready to take over at 1B next year, with Konerko playing part-time.
I love Paulie but I don’t see any way he can be back now unless they can somehow move Dunn. You can’t have 3 1B/DH types on the roster, you just can’t, am I wrong? That would leave only 2 guys on the rest of the bench besides the backup catcher. Paulie is a leader in the clubhouse but is he worth it at this point? He’s coming off his worst season, has he had it? A while ago everyone though Big Papi was done, he was not.
Losing Dunn would leave them short on lefthanded hitting but I’m sure sure would if they could. I’d rather keep Paulie, but can they move Dunn without paying all his salary? They seem unwilling to do that. Dunn, horrible, then a nice bounce back, then horrible again. Eesh.
I don’t think they could move Dunn without picking up at least 50% of his salary. IIRC, he makes $15 million/season, that’s a lotta cake for a ~.200 hitter and K’s at a high rate.
Papi was close to getting cut a few years back. Then, ‘PRESTO!’, he got good again. Must be those Dominican “vitamins”. Konerko needs some of Papi’s “vitamins”, Dunn too.
I don’t want to see Marmol pitch. Score will be 12-0 soon.
Mattingly .... Good riddance to ya.
LOL, as soon I saw his face I said it’s gonna be 10-0 soon, but he handled his business.
Not as much interest in the NL series, eh? Congrats to STL.
mistake to bring Rosenthal in to start the 9th .... if he falters, the inning won’t end and then they work the bullpen in reverse.
better to shorten the inning and bring him in with one or two outs. In any event, he already has 2 outs.
Over.
Congrats Cards.
Wacha Wacha (2-0) gets the MVP.
I cannot name more than 3 players on STL.
The STL win moves tomorrow’s game up to ~4 pm.
Cards oust Dodgers; ALCS Game 6 at 8 pm
http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/red-sox/post/_/id/32493/cards-oust-dodgers-alcs-game-6-at-8-p-m
It's already up on the Red Sox website... tomorrow night's game starts at 8pm ET (Saturday, Oct. 19).
Which doesn't make my husband and me happy... we have tix to the game. 4:00pm would have been perfect. The STL win ensures we will have a very late night in Boston tomorrow...
ESPN listed ~4 pm then changed it. Either way, it’ll still tie up traffic.
25-year-old Clayton Kershaw is probably THE best pitcher in all of baseball. I can't believe how he imploded on the mound tonight... just stunning. The entire team was awful tonight, behind the plate, on the mound and in the field.
That wild horse - the very talented Yasiel Puig - really needs to be tamed in the field. The Dodgers have some work to do with him over the winter.
Allowing Hanley Ramirez to play shortstop with a broken rib was ridiculous -- he could never dive for balls, or even run as well as usual.
There really wasn't even a game tonight... it was all Cardinals.
Hubby and I really wanted a World Series match-up of the Red Sox vs the Dodgers (with a Red Sox win of course). It would have been sweet to have the current Red Sox team beat the Dodgers with their line-up of former Red Sox whiners and malcontents: Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Hanley Ramirez and Josh Beckett. ;-)
Is there something else big going on in Boston on Saturday night? I know the Bruins are on the road in Tampa...
All I know is a game with an 8pm start will ensure we'll be out late on Saturday. We live about a 1.5 - 2.0 hour drive from Fenway.
We often don't stay 'til the end of Red Sox games, but if it gets exciting... or if they win the AL Championship... we're staying!
