Queen drummer Roger Taylor says they didn't want the movie to be "a joke."
Earlier this summer, Sacha Baron Cohen left GK Film's untitled Freddie Mercury biopic over "creative differences." Now it has come to light exactly what those differences were.
As it turns out, Baron Cohen actually dropped the Mercury project because the late singer's Queen bandmates didn't want the Borat star for the film.

Cohen does make some pretty disgusting jokes and foul humor, but he also has, I think, an eagerness to make his characters authentic--which is why he never seems to break character....
personally, i am glad they are searching for someone else to play the role of Freddie Mercury...
Not surprisingly Cohen has been type-cast as a funny, often ribald, buffoon. But he also is a clever fellow who I think intended to do a realistic portrayal of Mercury (with some humor of course) which I believe he was fully capable of doing.
Stallone, Carrey, and several other “light” or otherwise-non-serious actors have been able to step out of that mould and do some heavy drama from time to time. No reason Cohen couldn’t be counted among them.
Cohen also did Bruno....which was that gay Austrian whatever...and probably real reason why Queen not wanting him to play Mercury....although Mercury wore some queer looking outfits himself
Cohen is a far better actor than the ones you mentioned.
Especially in his role of Thenardier in Les Miserables
Casting a jackass to play a fag? The only thing better would have been to cast a fag jackass, but George Takei was busy and Elton John can’t act.
He was very good in "Les Miserable". As was the entire cast.
Maybe Jay Carney?
He was excellent in Talladega Nights.
Cohen is obnoxious but he would have been perfect for the part.
I think Cohen could be real good as a serious actor if he wanted to be. I really liked him in “Hugo”.
I’ve never seen Cohen in anything, but Mercury was an obvious homosexual. It’s not as if he tried to hide it onstage.
Maybe, but what a waste of a Cambridge education.

Fred was in a heterosexual relationship before he gave himself over to his base desires.
I have seen this happen to a friend in another city (ran into him through a common friend years after last seeing him). He was no longer in the lengthy “live-in” relationship with his girlfriend. Had lost a lot of weight, adopted more swishy mannerisms than he had in the past, and does not seem to be looking for a steady relationship. Drug use continues to be a factor in his life.
It’s a very unhealthy lifestyle.
He was manic and funny in Hugo. But he did not come across as Borat.
Well he managed to get Isla Fisher, so it did some good.
