Felony weapons charge for student who brought fishing supplies to school

The arrests of several students who unwittingly and accidentally violated school weapon policies has some Georgian lawmakers saying “zero tolerance” makes zero sense.

A Cobb County high school senior was charged with the felony of bringing weapons into a school zone after police found fishing knives in a tackle box in his car. Cody Chitwood, a 17-year-old student at Lassiter High School and avid fisherman, turned himself in and was released on $1,000 bond.

If the district attorney decides to prosecute, Chitwood could face two to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

“It’s pretty ridiculous,” said Chitwood in a statement to The Marietta Daily Journal. “I have an attorney and I’m hoping to get the felony dropped so I can still get in the Air Force.”

In my 1st grade class, in the Atlanta suburbs, during recess we played mumbly-peg with our pocket knives.

At one time, I thought the dog search was legitimate. I have since learned that the dogs can be trained to alert when the handler wants them to. All he has to do is give a certain tug on the leash or similar signal.

I’d bet they’d find a lunchroom lady in posession of a knife, the math teacher with a sharp pointed compass, the baseball coach with an evil bat, the principal with a paddle, the teachers’ lounge will also have knives, the custodian has all sorts of scary weapons and caustic chemicals, then there’s the art room with scissors, rulers and exacto knives and heaven forbid if we wander across campus to the building and mechanic trades, cosmotology, band, theater arts and ag classrooms. Heck, ban those deadly sharp pointed #2 pencils!!!

Government out of control. We are the citizens and the governments are becoming tyrannical.

I had TSA cop try to take my salmon flies as I was traveling to Nova Scotia to go Salmon Fishing. There was a "discussion" and I asked for the supervisor.

He let me pass with my thousands of dollars of equipment intact.

Any school principal who did this crap to one of my kids would get a visit from hundreds of parents who are sick of mindless "zero tolerance".

It just has to stop!

Where is their search warrant for Marijuana?

I hate the way they search for one thing and then if they find another innocent innocuous thing they can use that as “evidence” of a g-d d-mned trumped up charge...

Near every car in the parking lot has a tire iron that probably qualifies as a “bladed weapon” because a LOT of tire irons have the pointed end for taking off a hubcap...

How many children’s futures are being destroyed because of the permanent black marks on their records for these asinine rules. Sweet Lord, kids used to take guns to school so they could go hunting afterwards. In Jr. High I was in the California Cadet Corps and we drilled with plugged Springfield 03’s on campus, but the best part we live fired .22’s on the tennis courts for marksmanship. What a pussified environment we have let the schools stuff our boys into.

Different student, different school.

The subject of the article goes to Lassiter High School in East Cobb. During a random drug sweep of the parking lot (they do those in many district around here), the dogs caught a scent of a powder residue. It warranted a full search and that was when they found the tackle box with the knives.

I’ve seen that also (train dogs to alert on command). Then the officer can claim reasonable cause to search the vehicle, the occupants, even make arrests and seize property.

This is evil in action with power. It will “progress” to mentally and economically ruin and murder more innocent people. The US under progressives is a ball and chain. Ugly and malicious hearts and minds.

Coventry Student Suspended for Keychain

“Joseph’s parents are especially concerned about the effect of his three day absence on his studies. His father told Allen that he had no absences last year, and that his advanced math class covers “two chapters a week.” Just 26% achieved “proficient with distinction” on the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) tests conducted last year.

In the interview with channel 10, Joseph told Gugliotta that his suspension will lead to his missing the NECAP testing this year.”

"How many children’s futures are being destroyed because of the permanent black marks on their records for these asinine rules.(?)"

This young man is learning an important lesson at a relatively early time in his life. Exposure to these illogical and arbitrary actions by the government ought to at least innoculate him against socialism!

I learned by his age not to trust authority and I certainly don't regard that as a disadvantage.
