Run, Newt, Run!

A new political action committee is hoping to convince former Speaker of the House and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich to run for the U.S. Senate in Virginia next year.

Draft Newt PAC insists Gingrich, now a host of CNN’s Crossfire, is Republicans’ best hope for retaking the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.), who is vying for his second term.

“We want a credible challenger to Mark Warner, and no one could do what Newt could do to fight—and win,” said Andrew Hemingway, a former staffer on Gingrich’s 2012 presidential campaign who is leading the Draft Newt group, in a press release announcing the effort.

“U.S. Senator Newt Gingrich would be an immediate game changer, giving conservatives another voice that would take the fight to the Obama administration,” added Hemingway, who ran fundraising for the 2012 presidential bid.

I don’t see the Democrats going after Nancy Pelosi for that picture. That’s why they are winning... they don’t attack their own.

“Something is VERY wrong with that picture.”

If you get into the elite club your future and that of your family and friends is secure for perhaps generations. The average senator goes from x wealth to 20x wealth in just a few years. The more corrupt they are the wealthier they get. Nobody prosecutes them and they’ve made special laws just for each other. (Insider trading, for example is legal if you’re in Congress.)

does he regret it?

Didn’t he have a new eco-book coming out last year?

I never heard anything about it afterwards

I thought that book was scraped last year, at his request, but like you I haven't heard anything about it, and forgot to ask.. I thought I would never speak to him again after I saw him cuddle up with that @itch..

I do too...sent him some cash in the last election.

He's not perfect. But then we're not talking about perfect.

The problem here is we are letting the establishment Republican party define what a “viable” candidate is - so of course the answer will be the only “viable” candidates are establishment Republicans.

Here is where I am at - I am done voting for “viable” GOP candidates - that is what gave us McCain as Presidential candidate. If they are not a conservative and willing to fight for those values then I dont care if we lose the seat. Let the liberals run the country into the ground and then we can pick up the pieces from there. I would rather rip the band-aid off at this point than to keep slowly pulling it away and losing our souls in the process.

An excellent question. At this point, I’m not sure. Not so long ago, I’d have said Governor McDonnell, but he has turned into a serious disappointment. Bill Bolling turned out to be a total RINO menace, so he’s out, too. Absent running a current officeholder, perhaps recruiting a self-funding candidate from the private sector who can match Warner’s spending.

But running Newt is a no-go. He has been massively unpopular going back to his stint as Speaker, for which he has never recovered from (he would’ve performed worse than the execrable Socialist Willard). He’s a carpetbagger where VA is concerned, and nevermind his RINOesque tendencies, he’s way too old.

Newt does have a good grasp of history and has a big mouth.

So the question is...who better than Newt?

I guess I'm just fed up with what I see as "establishment" Republicans. I wouldn't exactly define Newt as a RINO but I feel his time has come and gone. It's time to reinvigorate the party with some new blood. I'm tired of the old "warhorses" the GOP keeps trotting out (i.e. Bob Dole)

It's time for a younger generation to take over, more people like Ted Cruz.

Newt is just as much an elite as all the rest. We need a real outsider.

When I say ‘viable’, I am looking at it from my standpoint, that is

A) What is their fundraising ability?
B) Do they have political savvy?

Warner is a very entrenched candidate. He’s more entrenched than Dick Turban in Illinois. Defeating him would be much tougher than knocking off say, Kay Hagan.

I want a strong conservative challenger, but our bench in Virginia overall seems weak.

Newt needs to go away. He had potential at one point but just isn’t useful anymore. Sorry to be crass but that is the case. He had, and still has good ideas but he has no idea how to put them into practice.

Ok, maybe he could still be useful as a big picture idea guy; but in the legislature... sorry not a good place for him.

I agree, I just thought it looked like there are few to no good contender that is ready to pitch in our dugout, and this warhorse has been to the game before, and is ready to go.. But once again I'm with you in your reasoning..

He's not perfect.

No, he's not. He's not perfect in the same way that a hurricane is "not perfect" weather for a picnic.

Seriously, is this a joke? It's insane that anyone wants to draft this RINO loser to run for the Senate. If he campaigns as well as he did for President he may by able to surpass Jim Gillmore in the getting your butt kicked by Mark Warner department. And in some parallel universe where he'd actually get elected he'd join the GOPE frontbench and "take it to Obama" just as well as he took it to Clinton.p
