This is a never-to-be-resolved question but my vote is Clapton’s second lead on Crossroads from the “Wheels of Fire” LP. I’ve heard it thousands of times and it still stops me in my tracks.
“Wheels of Fire”...one of my favorites when I was 17. The explosion of musical innovation in the 60s was incredible, a never-to-happen again event. I pity kids today with the crap they listen to.
Layla still sends chills down my spine, but Eruption, yeah, Eruption, it must be followed by ‘you really got me’ to have the same impact and push it over the top.
I'm with you there, but being a bassist, I have to confess I always listened to my other speaker on that particular song. :-)
I even saved up my money and bought an EB-3.
That has to be right up there. Did he miss a note?
The first guitar solo that struck me as a teen, was "Voodoo Chile," by Hendrix. I first heard it in the mid-70s. I must have been about 14. I remember thinking, "what was THAT?!"
If i’m correct, in that particular lead, Clapton’s hands never move up and down the fretboard. He does it entirely from one spot. And it really does sound fantastic.
