For the second year in a row, Eddie Van Halen has topped a major summer-long poll at GuitarWorld.com.
In 2012, readers crowned him the Greatest Guitarist of All Time. This year, one of his many six-string masterpieces, "Eruption," a wildly innovative instrumental track from Van Halen's self-titled 1978 album, was voted the Greatest Guitar Solo of All Time.

Not really. You could say he was more Libertarian, but he absolutely despised Reagan. Very anti-religious as well. What really got me was how he made it sound like the Republicans were the ones behind the PMRC, when it was Tipper Gore that was the primary force behind it.
Now I grew up when MTV started and remember their music but was more into R&B in that time. I could not believe how many great songs - not cheesy Hair Metal - but great rhythm
with no nonsense hard rock.

I have a hazy memory of a VH-1 special where Dee Snider and others blasted right-of-center politicians for that point in time and the PMRC.
I saw this about Zappa, not sure how much weight it holds:

the funny thing Dalberg is that in the early years, other than M Jackson and Prince, MTV didn’t play black music then.
I was listening and attending concerts by Lakeside, BarKays, Slave, SOS Band, Gap Band etc and these groups could not get their videos on back then.
Then years later it seemed it was all black music - or should I say all Rap. Now from what I gather not even Rap, just Reality shows.

I am probably as big a VH fan as anyone on this board but I have to question this one. As a homer, I love to see my favorite guy get the accolades but there are others that are better. EVH has done better (see the intro to Mean Street).
It would be hard to dispute that Eruption is probably the most INFLUENTIAL solo, however. The effect that one minute and 42 second piece of playing had on the rock music world and an entire generation of players and bands at that time is mind blowing. It changed the game.
Completely original. I used to lie on the sofa with my arms around my significant other and we would just totally listen.

Looooooved Yes. Saw several amazing concerts, with fantastic stage designs and lighting that set the style for everyone who came after.
And John Fahey from Takoma Park. He was as good/better than Leo Kottke. Sadly he drank excessively, often during a concert. But could he play when he put his mind to it.
