Word For The Day, Wednesday, 9/18/13
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
portend; verb
verb (used with object) 1. to indicate in advance; to foreshadow or presage, as an omen does: The street incident may portend a general uprising. 2. to signify; mean.
Etymology: early 15c., from L. portendere "foretell," originally "to stretch forward," from por- (variant of pro-) "forth, forward" + tendere "to stretch, extend" (see tenet). Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2010 Douglas Harper
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

No pushing at the door please!
morning
As the rain poured in through the canvas, we realized that it was a really portent.
portent is the noun form of our WFTD which is a verb, portend, but i will give you partial credit! ; ) A.5+
gotta give you full credit, just saw that the title has PORTENT, bc i switched to PORTEND and forgot to correct the title, MY BAD> A+++
can you please correct my title with the word PORTEND, thanks! otherwise, i am going to have people misusing the word til the cows come home!!
A+ please know that you meant to say PORTEND< which is the verb form, instead of portent, in your HW. sorry for the confusion!
so yes, the check tire pressure light coming on in the rental car this AM did portend a challenging day for me today! i have this rental bc my new 3 week old highlander is in the shop bc some ridiculous snot of a woman HIT it when it was a week old. So her insurance co. is paying for the repair and for a rental car for me. The rental car had the check tire pressure light come on this AM as i was dropping xsbaby at school. i have NO idea how to check tire pressure, but also didn’t know if it was safe to ignore that msg from the car or not. so i stopped at a gas station and asked if someone could help me, a nice young man standing behind me said he could help me check it. he put some air in, the msg did not go away, but he said that the tires looked fine and one might have a slow leak but that i would not have it go flat in the garage while i was at work today, which was my fear. he was very sweet and i gave him $5 for his time. he looked like he could have been MS13, but he was very sweet to me.
Ignore the obnoxious check tire pressure lightl
I had a new car once. I was rear ended and needed a new bumper within the first month.
just wondering, isnt checking the thread title, prior to hitting POST...im-portent. Lmao.
O’s 2008 campaign portended much that has come to pass in 2013.
No. It had to be Desparado.
That was our song
/seinfeld.
A+++ what a convivial bunch.
The Dude understands. He hates the f$$%ing Eagles, too.
oh i was beyond furious at this. The girlie at the rental car place got a little taste of it on Monday when i picked up the rental. after we went over the car for bumps, dings etc. she said Have you thought about how you are going to cover the car? i said what do you mean? she said insurance. i said won’t my insurance cover this? and before she could say boo i said the only reason i have this rental car is because some dimwit hit my 1 week old car and bc she was judged liable, HER insurer is paying for the repair and the rental and i will be d@mned if i pay dime one out of pocket for anything relating to this which was NOT MY FAULT. so she jumped back and let that go. i guess she was trying to get me to buy additional insur coverage.
yes, anyone who wasn’t braindead could see all of this coming. A+++
ha.
