When it comes to the fate of the iconic but now shuttered and dilapidated Houston Astrodome, take your pick from a variety of sports clichés to describe the stadium’s dire situation. The bottom of the ninth and down to the last out. On the ropes. A must-win ballgame.

A last-ditch effort has been organized to save the dome, with local and national preservation groups and a new political action committee banding together to come up with a solution for the stadium that involves rebirth and not razing the structure. …

I really have fond memories of that stadium, especially the comfort of watching baseball in Houston in 71 degree weather, beer in hand in a seat that set me back $2.50. (1966)

The Astrodome was somewhat of an improvement over Colt .45 Stadium, was it not?

I can't say I missed the mosquitos...

Yep, I would say that watching baseball without the mosquitoes and the oppressive summer heat near Beautiful Buffalo Bayou was a definite improvement.

The baseball was not always top notch, but there were moments: their catcher, John Bateman (IIRC)was built like an NFL nose tackle. A timeout was called one evening so that he could return to the dugout and change his pants after splitting them in a rather embarrassing play.

What Astroworld?

Last time I looked, it had been converted to a vacant field.

It does serve as a parking lot during the Rodeo and football games.

Went to Astroworld right before it closed. Had really been allowed to run down and lots of thugs running around. Really too bad. Never could understand why that happened.

perhaps the land could be re-purposed as a parking lot.

Those parking spots would cost between $18,000-36,000 apiece (depending on who's estimate of the razing costs you accept). Pretty pricey parking lot.

And if they EVER build another structure on that piece of land, expect to be picking up the tab for more "Reliant Center halls" at the cost of $100,000,000 or more.
