Do some research.

Ligers are larger than both parent species because of a quirk of genetics. Tigers inherit the size restriction genes from the male, lions from the female. Thus ligers, the result of a tigress bred to a male lion, are larger and tigons, the result of a lioness bred to a male tiger, are average to smaller, inheriting at least one functioning gene to control their growth.
