It was called “Meijer Thrifty Acres” when I was a kid growing up near Grand Rapids in the 1960s. My parents used to go to their store on Alpine Avenue just south of the junction of M-37 and I-96 about twice a month.

I think they are still a family-owned enterprise. Good for them.

Yep they are still family owned. We are in Lowell and got our own Meijers about 6 or 7 years ago. Lena Meijer is still alive, Fred died a few years ago.They were big time philanthropists in GR too. I haven’t been up on Alpine in awhile. Have been in this area since the mid 70’s. You would probably not recocnize Alpine Avenue now. It’s been built up like crazy.

I used to stop there quite a bit when I was younger. My parents would take me Christmas shopping at Woodland Mall and we would also hit other stores including that Meijer.
