Star Wars droid R2D2 spotted in Star Trek Into Darkness

It could be the last straw for hardcore fans angry at the long-running sci-fi saga's shift into space opera territory: R2D2, the diminutive robot star of the Star Wars films, has been spotted in a second Star Trek movie.

C-3PO's canny little friend was first seen briefly in 2009's Star Trek, which saw director JJ Abrams deliver strong reviews and impressive box office by rebooting the series with an all-action approach plus an entirely new cast as the crew of the USS Enterprise. Now the website io9 has pointed out that the droid can be seen being sucked into space one hour and 17 minutes into sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, which repeated its predecessor's success but has fallen foul of long-term fans.

At the annual Star Trek convention in Las Vegas last month, Abrams' film was voted the worst Star Trek film in the entire canon by "Trekkers". To add insult to injury, it was beaten not only by 1989's much-maligned, William Shatner-directed Star Trek V: The Final Frontier but by sci-fi spoof Galaxy Quest, which is not a Star Trek movie at all.

My wife and I are sci-fi fans and have tend to like most sci-fi movies and TV shows. That said we were both insulted by the stupidity of Abram’s reboots. The total ripoff of STII in “Into Darkness” (which had no “darkness”) put us off badly. The entire Trek idea has been beaten and worn to death to the point where it should be retired. 12 movies and 5 TV shows are enough.

However, Hollywood, having lost completely any idea of creativity, will keep foisting endless remakes on us. Star Trek, Terminator and Alien will run forever.

For every “District9” expect 5 or 6 mediocrities like “Avatar”.

My son was at that convention and this is what he has to say when I asked him...

Yes, apparently an extremely drunk "fan" made an emotional plea to the room and they basically dropped Into Darkness to the bottom of the list to shut him up. The real fans had it somewhere in the median. I wasn't in that session, thank God!

Also, fans upset about R2D2 in the debris? Are you telling me out of the thousands of Starfleet officers on board it isn't possible that one could have been a Star Wars fan and had an R2 in his quarters?

William Shatner said it best, "Get a life, people!"
