My husband called me tonight from a gold mine where he works in the interior of Alaska. I thought you might like to hear a bear story that was unusual. There is a guard gate to the mine and then a fifty mile dirt road that goes up steep hills. This guy was on his way up the hill when a caribou ran out of the woods and right into his truck. He gets out of the truck and looks at the injured caribou. Just then a black bear comes running out of the woods and grabs the caribou and finishes it off. The bear starts guarding the caribou on the road. The truck driver calls the guard gate to let them know how his truck was damaged and drives on up to the mine. I'm sure he was a little shaken but at least he didn't have to deal with an injured caribou.
Wow, caribou are huge!
thx cowgirl....interesting story....and a husband working a gold mine?...wow...
Don’t mess with Grizzly in the Circle of Life!

But YOU’RE not a gold digger, right? :-)
Interesting story. Including the fact that the “guard gate” is FIFTY MILES from the mine!
Yes, the guard gate is about ten miles from where I live and then a bus takes the guys to the mine. It is one of the largest in the world - Pogo.
Caribou, too!
Old advice to women seeking men in Alaska: “The odds are good but the goods are odd”. :))
called the guard gate?
not on cell phone .... CB radio?
They only let certain trucks up there so I guess they have a CB system.
I’m thinking the bear must have been chasing the caribou and the truck “interfered” with the chase. The driver is very lucky that the bear didn’t decide to up the menu from caribou to long pig.
I think so too. They guy said the bear was disturbed by his presence.
I’ve seen ones in Denali that looked as big as a small horse (600 - 700 lbs I’m guessing).
Haha - Long Pig - haven’t heard that expression since I read Coral Island as a boy!
He's lucky it wasn't a grizzly.
“The driver is very lucky that the bear didnt decide to up the menu from caribou to long pig.”
You think that’s an “up”? Don’t you know all the nasty stuff long pig puts into it’s body? The bear’s probably health conscious and wanted something more organic.
