His turn as Wilbur Force three years before that in "The Little Shop of Horrors" was, I feel, more nuanced and textured while still projecting that same Nicholson counterculture vibe he's famous for. Then again, his portrayal of Marvin Jenkins, the wrongly accused defendant in the "Aunt Bee, the Juror" episode of The Andy Griffith Show in 1967 perhaps demonstrates more range.
