HOLLYWOOD, August 26, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) Sexually explicit performances at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have caused a parents group to demand reform of the cable industry.
In the opening act, the always provocative Lady Gaga stripped down to a thong bikini that left little to the imagination.
However, it was former child star Miley Cyrus' performance that dominated headlines and newscasts around the country. The young star, who rocketed to fame as the lead character in Disney's Hannah Montana series, wore a flesh-colored bikini, and used a foam novelty hand in a variety of sexual ways before twerking in front of male singer Robin Thicke.
Networks said the program was approved for viewers as young as 14.
Parents Television Council Director of Public Policy Dan Isett accused MTV of marketing adults-only material to children while falsely manipulating the content rating to make parents think the content was safe for their children.
How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds? he asked. How is it appropriate for 14-year-olds to see a condom commercial and a promo for an R-rated movie during the first commercial break?
Heads should roll at MTV, said PTC Advisory Board Member and former BET Executive Paul Porter.
The PTC has said the show should make the nation rethink the way television is delivered. Isett called on Congress to pass the Television Consumer Freedom Act of 2013 (S. 912).
Cable companies currently bundle networks into plans, forcing buyers to pay for popular channels that may offend their values. The proposed bill, introduced by Senator John McCain this spring, would allow consumers to select and pay for only those cable networks they actually want to watch.
The bill has been read before the Senate Commerce Committee but gone nowhere.
The National Cable and Telecommunications Association rapped the measure, saying its current practices give viewers "a wider variety of viewing options [and] increased programming diversity."
But its supporters say the present arrangement denies customers choice.
After MTVs display last night, its time to give control back to consumers, Isett said.
Yes. She was suppose to be a nun. I found it quite sacrilegious.
I didn’ t care for Lady Gaga’s performance... the dancing and all was fine, but i didn’t get the costume changes.. none of it made sense to me... Kanye was boring... i enjoyed most of Justin Timberlake’s performance, but it was too long... Miley was pathetic, and she ruined Robin Thicke’s performance... overall, disappointing VMAs... imo...
I didn’t get the big white pearls... she kind of looked dressed like Barbara Bush with a square head... surprised she didn’t wear a rosary...
Drop the cable, hook the TV up to the internet and watch what you want. I think that’s what most kids are doing now anyway. Cable TV is going the way of the home phone, an unnecessary expense for a product that is not often used.
I agree with you. IT was music vs shouting. Just think if there had been an MTV during the big band era. Big orchestras! Dancers and singers. That was entertainment. Don’t get me wrong, there was some of that too this year as well, but for the most part it was trash, that no one will remember after the saw dust is swept off the stage floor.
Prediction: 20 years from now an X rated video of 15 minute fame people like Myli will be common place.
I didn’t see it, my kids didn’t see it, and we didn’t miss it. Perhaps some parents shouldn’t allow the TV to be a babysitter.
Heads should roll for vulgarity on MTV???? They’re about 30-some years too late, aren’t they?
Here it is, shocking even for MTV

She can't because a crucifix would cause her to burn and melt like Dracula.
But the open market is what you have when a cable company packages channels and then offers the packages to the customers who can decide to either by the service or not. Having the John McCain and the government come in and regulate the offering, and screwing with the business model, is the opposite of an open market.
Besides, people always have the choice to watch TV shows on the Internet.
“The worst thing about it all though was watching that old geezer Alan Thicke and his old mans body. What a turn off.”
That wasn’t Alan Thicke. It was his son Robin Thicke. And he’ young, not an old man with an old man’s body. Shows what generation you are from not to know this, lol.
Quit subscribing to cable. Get internet only and subscribe to Amazon prime and/or Netflix. Watch what you want, when you want. AP is not all pay per view-many current shows and older movies are free. Drive the market with $...
Not sure about the sports, but the “headline news” is available online for free you can even loop it to see the same stories over and over again just like watching real tv. LOL
Bet she never gave a seconds thought about denegrating islam in any way.
Just cancel your cable, stupid Parents Group.
Jeesh, I know that. Just put that in to see if someone was actually reading my post, and to see if anyone else around here has a sense of humor this morning besides me...
