The show is most likely a combination of loosely scripted or staged and impromptu. I heard in an interview that the producers simply say "Hey, why don't you guys go do XXX?", and then film Willie and crew going about doing what ever idea was put forward. Also, Clint Boyer, said in a radio interview in KC that the Robinsons behaved off screen the same way they did on screen when he was down filming the camouflaged limo episode.

I recall reading that Phil call a meeting of the family in regards to "bleeping" portions of the talking during the show. He wanted to know if they were cursing. When they told him they had not, he went to the producers and told them not to bleep their comments because it gave the impression they were cussing.
They haven't bleeped anything since that first season.
