I got you! Iam not an avid fan of the show. It is obvious that the inane scenarios are scripted. But compared to the vast wasteland of American TV, it is a breath of fresh air. I, too, have watched Deadliest Catch. I feel the first seasons were less contrived. I hurt when Captain Phil died.
They are actually risking their lives in the harshest of climates for fortune.

Captain Phil was a good guy. He virtually lived on Red Bull and cigs so it is no surprise it caught up with him. It seems most of the Deadliest Catch guys live on the edge and are on a short rope to meet St. Peter.
