Pete Rose says he should have picked Alcohol , drugs or beating his wife.
(Excerpt) Read more at msn.foxsports.com ...
rose pissed off some fat old commisioner of baseball by lieing to him about his gambling problems.
he didn’t lie aboud drugs, steroids, criminal activity, beating his wife or kids, no underage little girls or boys he simply tried to cover his gambing addiction.
Rose belongs in the hall andsome of these baseball big whigs need clubbing with some bats.
I don’t think he got a bum rap.
As a manager betting on baseball teams, one can rig things to either make good strategic moves to win or do really stupid moves to help lose, a game. And if yo ucan mess with the chances of your team winning or losing and you’re also betting on them, that’s even worse. It’s shades of the Black Sox when managers gamble on baseball games.
And don’t forget the years of denial Rose had, swearing he wasn’t gambling.
Sorry Pete. The fact he’s still got sour grapes over it, I personally don’t think he’s really sorry for doing it. Or even knows why it was a big deal.
He would have gotten a better deal from baseball, that’s for sure. The man can’t even buy a ticket!!!
Pete violated a rule that specifically says banned for life. The steroid crowd didn’t. Now maybe the rule book SHOULD say that for roids, but as of the time of their violations it didn’t and currently doesn’t.
He piled up huge debts to these mobsters.
A thrown game here and there, and maybe the boss will forgive said debts.
And he was a very well known gambler during his playing days. I'd be surprised if he "all of a sudden" started betting on baseball when he became a manager.
Sorry Pete. You were such a hero of mine.
I don't believe anything he says anymore.
I don’t feel much pity for Pete Rose, either, but why are we pretending that steroids and peds do not threaten the very foundation of the game?
If Rose manages differently to win a bet, he’s cheating.
Those on peds are likewise cheating.
Not really seeing the difference from the standpoint of the integrity of the game.
Yeh I have always felt bad for Pete and hoped they would relent. He does belong in the Hall of Fame. But as I said betting on baseball has just always been taboo. For some reason there is just zero tolerance. I personally think its a really bad thing for an athlete to do.
Ummm Pete did do drugs, he just wasn’t prosecuted in the speed scam he was in up to his eyeballs.
” Pete is getting hosed on the Hall. But, so long as that turd Selig occupies the Commissioners Chair Pete will be on the outside looking in.”
Pete should have his name expunged from ever existing in baseball. I despise Bud Selig, but it’s not his banning to undo. Bart Giamatti banned Rose and it will stick. Pete Rose was the dirtiest SOB to play the game in the modern era
bttt
He could have picked another yet some others like
Coaching a little league team
Serving in a soup kitchen
Running a summer camp
Collecting stamps
What a bunch of crap, he know the consequences and did it anyway.
Yep, we all should remember it is JUST A GAME. A boys game that is played by grown ups that get paid a lot of money.
It does not move heaven and earth by who wins and loses but a lot of people that have enshrined it and made it seem so.
Rose has paid enough of a price and he should be in the HOF from his PLAY on the field. I loved to watch him play but I could not stand him with his goofy haircut.
No known drug players records should stand, even the lord Barrys HR record. However, we all know it will stand because we would be known as racists.
“Cheaters are in the HoF, yet Pete sits out for putting money on his team to win.”
Pete Rose threw games he had no money bet on. It’s how he was paying his huge losses to the mob
“Alex Karras also bet on Detroit to win and was banned from Football.”
He was banned for a year in the mid 60’s, he played again after the ban
He got the deal he agreed to. The agreement he signed is damning. He can apply for reinstatement according to the agreement, but he will never get it
That's exactly what I meant. I thought "bribe" would leave me with less words to misspell.
The first five years or so of Pete's career, the MLB minimum was $5,000. The guys who drove the team bus made more than that! A mobster could buy these guys for life. Bernie Goldberg did a piece on REAL SPORTS intimating that certain 1978 Yankees (Reggie) were in deep debt to mobsters and dropped fly balls.
Thanks to Curt Flood, Marvin Miller and the free market, nowadays all players have more money than any mobsters. But, I bet they still prey upon NCAA athletes.
I agree. Gamblers and steroid users should both be banned. What I don't like seeing is one of those groups pointing to the other and saying: well, what I did was bad, but that other group is worse.
Both groups are bad for the integrity of the game. Ban both groups.
So Pete agreed to the lifetime ban, and agreed that he wouldn't challenge it.
So what's his beef NOW?
Not like he was a child in 1989. He was 48.
He signed on the line that is dotted.
Sorry, Pete.
Your uniform may be in the HOF, but you shouldn't be.
I would disagree, but I respect your opinion. To be fair, I am not a baseball fan, but...wasn’t he betting that his team would win the game?
