I’ve met plenty of stupid people. But ignorance is no excuse, especially not when that ignorance costs someone else their life.
My father lived in Clovis, NM in the ‘50s, and you know how close that is to the TX Panhandle.
Another poor couple left their child in a small bedroom with a electric space heater in the winter. The baby died and they were charged.
I have never heard of a baby being left in a car in the winter and dieing from hypothermia.
Our Wal-Mart has signs on both sets of entrance doors to remind people that they need to make sure they take their kids in the store with them.

I’m talking law, and you’re going into personal attacks. Says a lot.
I was comparing NEGLECT that doesn’t result in death being prosecuted, while NEGLECT that does result in death demanding sympathy. Tell me the difference. ‘Oops, I was so busy playing video games/drinking with friends/going to the store for ‘just a minute’ that my child died’ usually gets the neglectful/stupid parent/guardian/babysitter arrested-does it not? ‘Mistakes’, like talking on the phone while a toddler falls into a pool, are accidents AND neglect.
Failure to see to the well-being of a child, resulting in injury/death of the child is all that I care about. The circumstances or excuses don’t change the outcome.” I didn’t think...” is a pitiful excuse for causing a child’s death. How is ‘ They didn’t think hours at 100+ degrees would kill my baby,’ different from “I didn’t think giving the baby methadone/alcohol to quiet it would kill it?”
It appears this couple was neglectful in the past-and failed to understand that putting a newborn in a tightly packed back seat, with no AC, and driving for hours in the heat could be harmful for a tiny baby. It may be that they had no choice and no other way to get where they were going. Unless, and until, I hear that they constantly checked the baby, doing everything they could to keep her cool, and the trip was simply too hard for her-I agree with the police who charged them. It was negligent homicide.
My point is that with all the inbreeding going on some folks are just as dumb as a box of rocks and they don’t think about anything but the lowest levels. I don’t think it is legal to jail someone who can’t read beyond minimal and is unable to perform critical thinking which is what we’re discussing here. True ignorance is commonly known as being stupid.
You can jail people who can’t read. They have to be so disconnected from reality as to not be able to understand their legal situation on any level for you to not be able to jail them. That’s way past stupid all the way to handicapped. These folks can pack a car and drive across country, they ain’t mentally handicapped, though they are stupid, and that stupidity killed their child, and that’s called negligent homicide, and it’s why they BELONG in jail.
