Tom and Jerry fans accuse Warner Brothers of censorship after episodes which show the cat and mouse 'blacked-up' are pulled from new collection

• The Golden Collection Volume Two was supposed to be uncut

• Two episodes have been taken out because they are deemed 'inappropriate'

• Fans have accused Warner Brothers of omitting history

Box-set was meant to go on sale two months ago but yet to reach shelves

Fans of the classic cartoon Tom and Jerry are furious two episodes deemed 'inappropriate' because they feature the cat and mouse 'blacked-up' have been removed from a new collection.

Warner Brothers' Golden Collection Volume Two was intended to be an uncut series of the popular animation in chronological order.

But offending episodes Casanova Cat made in 1951 and Mouse Cleaning from 1948 have been pulled.

In both episodes either the cat or mouse is 'blacked-up'.

In Casanova Cat Jerry's face is covered in cigar smoke before he is made to do a minstrel dance.

The box-set was also meant to go on sale two months ago but has yet made it into shops.

Fans have been posting angry messages on websites where you can pre-order the Blu-ray DVD such as Amazon explaining why they won't be buying the discs.

One message reads: 'Culture is always reflected in cartoons, and while this may not have been right, it existed.

'It is a shame to omit pieces of history in a collection simply due to PR getting shaky boots over the past.'

Another posted: 'These releases are almost exclusively for the adult collector, so why treat us like infants?'

A campaign group has also appeared on Facebook called 'Unleash the banned Tom and Jerry cartoons.'

youtube has it.

At a little over one minute we see the maid and she is obviously a 'person of color'. Then a little further to the "blackface minstrel dance" - hilarious!

The last T&J collection I bought had Mammy Two-Shoes all over the place. Of course, Whooopi! Goldberg was on hand to inform us all of the racist and insensitive nature of the cartoons and, by extension, Americans of the age.

Who cares. They’re great, great cartoons.

I’ve always disliked Tom & Jerry, even when I was a child. Whoever created that cartoon must have really hated cats. Tom always got brutalized, and in some of those old episodes he got killed at the end. The guys who created The Simpsons made a nasty satire out of Tom & Jerry called “Itchy & Scratchy”. Now they’re running those old Tom & Jerry cartoons on Boomerang. I never fail to remember to miss them.

I have the complete opposite take. I would DVR Tom & Jerry every day on Boomerang. Tex Avery was truly the King of Cartoons.

In Soviet Russia, every time a new regime came to power, the party would change all of the history books. Sound vaguely familiar?

The new US History textbooks should be titled: “America: Our Changing Past”.

During WW1 the British were called “Toms” and the Germans were called “Jerrys”.

So trying to omit the racism from this show is impossible.

Oh wait, it doesn’t count if you’re white. :)

Silly me...

They even now edit the Classic Fawlty Towers episode, “The Germans”, because Major used the N-word in it.

Here's a couple of good ones by Walter Lantz. (I think he's the guy who did Woody Woodpecker.)

Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company 'B' (1941)

Scrub me Mamma with a Boogie Beat (1941)

Holding someone in slavery is itself a terrible abuse, but putting the morality of the institution aside...why on Earth would a plantation owner harm or neglect the slaves upon whose health and labor his plantation depended? Answer: He wouldn't. You're right. The depiction conflicts with the modern narrative being used to demonize and shame the South in particular and Caucasians generally.

I saw Song the South years ago and saw nothing wrong with it. It takes place AFTER the Civil War. The main character, a black man, is very positive and likable. The only negative characters were a couple of bratty little white boys.

His quote was:

The strange thing was that throughout the morning, she kept referring to the Indians as “Niggers.”

No, no, I said.
Niggers are the West Indians, these people are Wogs!

I would tend to agree. I guess because he is not an angry black man it is wrong. I think there were a couple of charaterizations that would be considered a little of putting now.
