1965 Boston Dome (proposal)
Stadium Page ^ | 8/5/13 | Stadium Page

Posted on 08/05/2013 3:32:05 AM PDT by raccoonradio

This plan was proposed for the Boston South Station area in 1965. It consisted of a retractable dome for football and baseball along an arena for basketball, hockey, and dog racing.

TOPICS: Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: boston; sports; stadiums
Note: now that Red Sox owner John Henry is apparently buying the Boston Globe some wonder if the paper might move elsewhere and 135 Morrissey Blvd in Boston could be a new home for the Red Sox. For laughs here's a look at what might have been, mid-1960s. Imagine the joy of Bobby Orr's historic goal here...the Red Sox winning a world series in a retractable roof stadium (OK in '04 the clinching game was in St Louis, and in 04, Denver...)

I always find these sort of “future past” designs interesting, especially when they were not built. It makes you think “what if”.

Imagine what could have been achieved without Teddy’s Folly (The big dig) soaking up billions of dollars.

Ditching old Fenway park would be a battle in itself. I know the fight to save Tiger stadium raged on for years. I wish it could have been saved but there just wasn’t the money to do so.

There is something special about the old school ball parks.

Sports teams get tired of their old stadiums after 20 years.

What if this had been built?

It would have been torn down and replaced with something even more expensive 15 years ago.

Tiger Stadium. Baseball the way it was meant to be watched.

I got to see a few games there in the early 60's..the right field overhang was unreal..I've heard of outfielders waiting to catch a ball, and it ended up being a homer, because it landed in the upper deck.

My favorite quirk of old ballparks was Cincinnati's Crosley Field. A large part of the outfield was terraced...think Houston's "Tal's Hill" X 100....and you get the idea. I spent a few weeks the summer of '65 out there..and went to about 10 games. The place was a dump..it was torn down a few years later....IIRC foul area behind home plate was HUGE..even bigger than today's Oakland Coliseum..

Miguel Cabrera would be at 60 or more home runs right now if he played in Tiger stadium.

And if Ted Williams had played in the original Yankee Stadium..he’d have hit 80...and if Cabrera played in Fenway..he might might hit 100 doubles and 80 HRs

If the owners have enough money to pay their multiple felons or juiced up “professionals” millions then they sure as hell should pay for their own playgrounds.

In Western NY we are still paying for 2 stadiums even though only one was built. A huge criminal enterprise in both the public and private sector walked away from a domed stadium after it had been contracted to be built. Of course the inevitable law suits began and the area lost and had to pay millions and then had to build a 2nd open air stadium (Ralph Wilson, who gets to sit in his closed in box seats (when he is not at deaths door) did not want the same covered privileges for the people buying his over priced tickets to watch all the tattooed, juiced, felons play a game.

So even if someone in WNY never goes to the stadium, they are paying for 2 and now they want to build another one.

Build your own playgrounds and then you can pay your felons whatever you have left over.

As much as I detested The Swimmer, Boston has been greatly improved by the Big Dig.

Fenway is staying. The owners have put in over 40 million dollars in improvements in the past 10 years. I was at Fenway last summer & they did a great job with it.
