COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A Colorado black bear with a taste for German food came up empty on its third night visit to a Colorado Springs restaurant.
Surveillance video taken at the back of the Edelweiss Restaurant showed the bear pulling a dumpster full of restaurant garbage away from restaurant. In the second foraging incident, the bear deftly maneuvered the dumpster around another dumpster and out of the view of the camera.
The bear rolls the dumpster away from the restaurant then tips it over, foraging for scraps.
The dumpster weighs about 500 pounds. Edelweiss manager Dieter Schnakenberg said it takes two of his employees to move the container.
The restaurant now has "tack boards" -- basically plywood with nails sticking out -- along the edge of the dumpster to deter bears. The strips were used at the suggestion of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, which provided them to the restaurant. .
After a number of people complained about the use of tack boards on the restaurant's Facebook page, the restaurant posted this clarification, "(CPAW) reassured me the bear will not be hurt by the nails, he will feel them and move on. We do NOT want to hurt the bear only deter it so that it does not become a problem."
In the latest video, taken overnight Thursday into Friday, the bear can be seen leaving empty pawed. The video below was taken the second night.
“Smarter than the average bear.”

Gripping video. He pushes that dumpster around like it’s just his shopping cart.
CO ping.
And that bear doesn’t even have an EBT card.
Good grief! The dumpster's on wheels. Who's he got working for him - a couple of tiny mexicans?
Amazing. Looks like a guy in a bear suit. The power in these animals is staggering.
Is there really a need to make light of a homeless bear’s misfortunes?
THIS IS RACIST!
He was profiled...a BLACK bear!!
Mexicans?
The article showed night 2. This is the first night:

The 3rd night, the dumpster was removed.
Did I spell it wrong?
How peculiar.....Several years ago, a friend and I wen to Colorado to do a little gold mining. we camped out on the claim, and of course when camping you do generate some trash. We kept it all in a plastic trash bag, and when we went to leave, we were just going to put it in a dumpster somewhere.
Well, SURPRISE, SURPRISE! We found out that Colorado has a state law that says all dumpsters have to be PADLOCKED shut, to keep the bears out. We ended up having to bring our trash all the way back to Kansas to find an open dumpster to throw it in.
So, I guess this bear is not only smart enough to make off with the dumpster with the goodies in it, he must also know how to PICK A LOCK in order to get any scraps out of it.
The same suggestion was published in our local paper after a bear and her two cubs broke into a house. Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
I had to use tack strips on my drafting board way back when to keep people from leaning on it while I was inking a drawing. The sign didn’t work, but the tacks did.
I thought I had a bear visiting my property, twice, in the last week. Last night I found out it was a raccoon. Caught him climbing the deck where a door was open to cool the house. I might try some tack boards on the deck or the post he was climbing to discourage that. No risk of a person stepping on them doing that.
It looked like it was unlocked, plus it looked like a plastic lid anyway. He’d tear through that in one swing if he wanted to.
In the 1930s I watched the Yosemite Bear feeding program.
Slightly down river from the Park, cars and people would gather on the North side of river while bears assembled on the South side.
The Park garbage trucks dumped their daily collections on that South side.
I had a 600 lb. bear come on my porch a few yrs. ago because he wanted the cat food. SO...I stacked about 6 heavy big blue containers against the porch door with canned goods in them believing he could not open the door. WRONG! I woke up the next day to see he had shoved the door open like nothing. He had dragged one of the blue containers over the front door steps and rooted through it. Smashed a popcorn can from Christmas that I had on the porch floor. It was flat as a pancake. lol! I started putting Pine Sol around the porch after that and he never came back.
I’d say that you smoked me out, but smoke is also black. *sob* I repent!
