originality wasn’t the order of the day back then.

Actually, it was descriptive. The area was marsh, deciduous trees, grasses, and moraines (a.k.a. sandbars). Quite a few trees as a matter of fact. Deciduous trees lose leaves in the fall. Massive amounts of leaves settling in the water turn it - black.

They called it as they saw it... ;-)
