'The new star of Doctor Who will be revealed in a special live programme on Sunday, the BBC has announced.
The half-hour show, presented by Zoe Ball, will feature an interview with the new lead, as well as 11th Doctor Matt Smith and executive producer Steven Moffat.
"The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who's taking over the Tardis," Moffat said.
"For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve."
Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, is on BBC One at 7pm on 4 August.
According to the official announcement, Ball "will unveil the 12th Doctor in the first ever interview in front of a live studio audience set against the backdrop of a swirling vortex, amongst Daleks and the Tardis".
Smith, who has played the Time Lord since 2010, announced in June that he would be bowing out in this year's Christmas special.
The announcement sparked much speculation about who might take over, with Peter Capaldi, Ben Daniels, Rory Kinnear and Ben Whishaw.'

Peter Capaldi is a fantastic actor and would be a wonderful choice. Back to an older Doctor with great gravitas.

Interesting collection of possibilities on TVGuide.com.
Doctor Who: Who Should Be the Next Doctor?
They also list some pro's and con's for each possibility. [I mentioned Andrew Potts, the person in the last photo, when I first heard Matt Smith was leaving.]

It sounds like it will be an overhyped announcement in extremely bad taste. I suggest LeBron James.

BBC America and Netflix have a wonderful lineup of British shows and have tapped into a viewership that was so tired of the likes of Honey Boo Bo and Dance Moms.

I signed up for BBC America on my cable a few months ago. I have been rather disappointed with it. It shows a lot of movies that I can get on a dozen other US cable channels.
I wish they would show more of the British TV series and less of the repeats of US movies.

I would like to see some blocks of classic British TV shows beyond Dr Who. The Sweeney would be one.

My 16 year old daughter watches Dr. Who and bakes Tardis birthday cakes for her friends who are fans.

I figured the next Dr Who would probably come out of the closet as homosexual.

I figured the next Dr Who would probably come out of the closet as homosexual. It'll be the foppish Russell Brand. If this were a US telly show, it'd be Andy Dick.

Or maybe they'll cast John "You thought you'd got rid of me" Lydon:
