They’re apparently dumping Matt Smith.
Smith gave some indications last year that he was tiring of the roll. It wasn't until this year that he made the announcement. I never heard any rumors that he was being forced out.
Smith was named the replacement for Tennant in early 2009. IIRC, he will have been The Doctor for 4 seasons and Tennant was for 5 seasons.

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to imply Smith was being forced out, just that he appears to be leaving the show. I hadn’t heard that he was asking to leave, but I don’t follow these things.
