The Armalite "AR15" has been around since 1957, but ArmaLite sold its rights to Colt ("Colt's"), and the first Colt's AR15s were manufactured in December 1959. The USAF adopted it first as a US military rifle in 1962.
It's really a 1950s gun more than a 1960s gun.
