Sad news out of Mississippi — we must bid farewell to The Boomer.

Former Gold Glove first baseman George Scott, a fan favorite during two stints in Boston, has died at age 69.

Scott was a member of the Impossible Dream Red Sox in 1967, when he won the first of his eight Gold Gloves, and he had his last All-Star season here in 1977 after returning from a five-year stint in Milwaukee.

Scott finished with 271 homers and 1,051 RBI. He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006.

Scott wasn't the only former Red Sox player to pass away over the weekend. Right-hander Frank Castillo, who spent parts of three seasons here in the early 2000s, reportedly drowned near his home in Arizona yesterday at age 44.

If I remember, Scott used to wear this white gaudy necklace even in games. When asked what the white beads that made up the necklace were he replied “they’re the second baseman’s teeth”.

The picture at the link shows Scott and Tony Conigliaro in an old team pic. Look how skinny the arms of both of them are!

Wonder what has changed in baseball through the wonders of chemicals?

He played in the era of no drugs. Just players and personalities that didn’t show boat! Loved this era....
