School Supply Lists (Vanity)
Me

Posted on 07/28/2013 3:45:35 AM PDT by MacMattico

I'm in NY and my daughter's schools just recently put out their "school supply lists" -- what students have to have for each class and supplies they "share" like tissues, whiteboard markers, colored pencils. My kids are in high school and Jr High.

It cost me $206 for school supplies! And we spend about $17,000 per year per student in this district! Wayyy over taxed!! My parents couldn't have afforded this for 4 kids.

I told the Superintendent this was ridiculous. She tried to steer me to a "charity" group that could help me get the supply's. I said I'm not in need of charity, I think you're wasting our money! She told me not to worry, when school starts they'll have some free supply give-a-ways! How dense! I don't need your $$, I need you to stop wasting money that isn't yours!

It is impossible for government to provide a religiously neutral education. The solution is to move toward vouchers and tax credits and then on to complete privatization.

The religious worldview that teachers in government **CHOOSE** to force upon their students is GODLESSNESS. No one is holding a gun to these teachers heads forcing them to support, uphold, and establish socialist-entitlement and godless government schooling.

No teacher's classroom is religiously neutral because a religious neutrality education is impossible. Godlessness is no more religiously neutral than a God-centered one in content or consequences.

we still sing religious carols during our Christmas Sing -A-Long

Schools like this are teaching the children that an occasional nod in God's direction is OK. It is teaching children to be casual about their faith.

Wow! What a great religiously loaded lesson that is! /s ( eye roll!)

and I don't believe it's always done properly.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In those cases the children aren't being properly schooled anywhere ( home or the institution).

It has been my anecdotal observation that all academically successful children are homeschooled or afterschooled. This is true even when the academically successful kid comes from dirt poor and illiterate immigrant families.

Where are the studies that show where learning is happening and who is doing the instructing? You won't be able to find them because these studies have **never** been done. We spent up to $30,000/ child/year in a socialist-entitlement schooling program and NO ONE has ever checked to see if it is effective or not.

Allow me to provide you an example: Me.

My parents were good, decent, honorable people. My dad was lucky to graduate high school; I saw his report cards. My mother was a little more successful academically, but a college education wasn't anywhere in the cards.

About all the afterschooling I got was, "Did you do your homework?" Mind you, my parents appreciated the value of education, especially as their lives turned out to be difficult, at least when my sister and I were young, but they were inequipped and overwhelmed by working to keep the bills paid.

A teacher changed my life. She told me that I had a gift for academics, and that if I studied and worked hard enough, I could achieve things beyond my dreams.

She was right. That's why I entered teaching as a second career. I look for children that I might inspire.

Yes, for high school, a pocket reference should be enough.

That’s still cheaper than Public Schools. Don’t forget, your kids don’t need a new wardrobe every year.

Plus, if you’ve got multiple kids, the costs become negligible for the future kids.

For us, number 3 and 4 are high school (homeschool) Our budget is probably under $200 this year. Number 3 is also starting community college this year so we are paying his tuition.

Did someone say biscuits?

http://www.joyofbaking.com/Biscuits.html

I love buttermilk biscuits. I have some friends who farm and the wife is an excellent baker and cook. I asked her to show me how to make biscuits and we made the ones in this video. She substitutes buttermilk for regular milk and adds 1/4 tsp. of baking soda, in addition to the baking powder that's needed. Please add the salt that's needed or the biscuits will not have any flavor. And make sure the sticks of butter are cold before cutting them into the flour. The secret is to not work the dough too much but to get everything mashed together and then press it out or roll it out on the counter.

I had a running battle with the school here over that darn free lunch form. It was the school’s policy for everyone to fill it out. I refused, I told them I was not asking for it, so it was none of their business how much money we made. My battle with them went on for years...finally they decided to leave me alone. I got very angry, some years they would have an ice cream party or something for the class that got all their forms in first. Trying to use peer pressure on the kids, but my kids knew I would not return the form.

bgill,

I had to look up to see if you were in the same catholic asylum I went to. One of the nuns at my school ended up in jail after decades of child abuse. In my brothers class, some kid spilled his milk and she made him lick it off the floor.

I broke my glasses on a Saturday and had to wear them taped together for a few days. The old bat nun principle just kept staring at me and pointing me out.

One of the priests was incredibly profane and later died of AIDS.

Your school district is way above the national average for what an average teacher makes. I live in one of the highest salary area in the nation and teachers don't even come close to that.

Shush up! You're spoiling perfectly good rants, bursting bubbles and generally raining on parades.

After 12 years as a teacher, my daughter decided to go for greener pastures and quit teaching, she has a much more lucrative job now than the $39,000 per year. She had 12 years experience and a Master's degree.

I took the school and the all powerful nuns to task.....and forced the first referendum in school since the student council WAS a democracy. And the students won.

I wish they’d drop the .9 cents

I wish they’d post the amount of federal and state tax per gallon on every pump.

Verga, why are you posting to me? Are you still on forum probation for stalking wintertime?

Never have been, but I heard that she/he might have been for stalking me.

That’s an actual screen shot of an HP11c calculator running on an iPhone. I bought it a few months ago for (I think) $10 — outstanding investment. It’s a complete simulation of the 11c which is quite an accomplishment, so the $10 is an incredible bargain.

I have both an 11c (about 1978) and a 12c (about 1980) — I’m with you, hate to think of the day they die. RPN is SO logical and easy to use. You’re right, it’s hard to go back.

Read “Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman” to get an idea of how they were doing the calculations to build the Bomb in the Manhattan Project!

One of my favorite books. I loved the part when he talks about the clerical workers having to punch all the cards and then waiting for the results to come back.
