I remember having a job where you could actually leave the office and not have to deal with work until you came back. Secretaries (think "Mad Men") would take messages for you on little pink squares of paper and when you came back, they'd hand them to you and you could decide whether or not to call that person back or just throw the slip of paper in the trash.
