Public-health officials discount role of sex in people's response to flu and other infections.
Sabra Klein came to the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction this week armed with a message that might seem obvious to scientists who obsess over sex: men and women are different. But it is a fact often overlooked by health researchers, says Klein, an immunologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland.
Her research on influenza viruses in mice, presented at the meeting in Montreal, Canada, helps explain why women are more susceptible to death and disease from infectious pathogens and the reason is intimately linked with reproduction. Shes one of the people that really gets the bigger picture as far as why do we see these patterns, says Marlene Zuk, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, in St. Paul.
Women generally suffer more severe flu symptoms than men, for example, despite the fact that they tend to have fewer viruses during an infection. To Klein, this suggests that women quickly mount a substantial immune-system attack to clear infections and suffer the consequences of the inflammatory responses that flood their systems. This is where females run into trouble, Klein says.
She and her collaborators have found this disparity in mice infected with flu viruses1. But when the researchers castrated the males and removed the ovaries from the females, the difference disappeared as the males became more sensitive to infection.
But testes are not simply protective. Klein found that giving the neutered females the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone actually protected them from disease.
For females, infections appear to throw these cycling sex hormones out of whack. They elongate the oestrus cycle in non-neutered female mice stretching the part...

Point taken
I am not always the best spoken
Just pokin’ ya with a stick, buddy...:)
Every woman I ever knew except my mom and grandma. Seems almost everyone of my friends have had the same experience.
Hard not to see a pattern in it all.
You had a ditch?
I had a ditch!
The “mountains” of dirt and rocks at the top made wonderful ‘backgrounds’ for my Breyer horse scenarios.
[and the ditch was my own little bunker where no big people could find me]
:)
True, (often trying to impress women)...
I wonder if low alcohol consumption is a factor?
My husband and I have been married 56 years in Dec. No problems, no separations, very few disagreements. I know some divorced people but it is mostly because the men couldn’t keep their pants zipped.
You’re from another more moral generation. I wish that the younger generations had keep the moral values your generation had. I am sorry that things have so degenerated that most ... not all ... but most younger women today have been indoctrinated into the idea that they don’t “need” a man. They use them for sex and a meal ticket and leave them if and when the going gets tough or just the next pretty face. There is no staying power or partnership mentality in todays women. Remember I said ... most women. I see it day after day and more and more where the man is shafted by his ex and the court system. It’s not so much that the man can’t keep his pants “zipped” that breaks up the relationship any longer. It’s the feminist mindset that has be drilled into the younger woman’s head that they can have it all with no consequences for their actions and no loyalty or consideration for the men in their lives. They therefore seek the path that most serves their own particular wants and needs at the time with no regard to what it does to the men left in their self-serving wake. It’s a sad state of affairs ... forgive the accidental pun ... but that just the way it is.
Check this out: You Monster.
But... we were talking about womenz. At least the article was, and I was.
Here's another music video you may like, and it's from a woman's point of view. Have hubby sit with you and watch this. You'll both be LOL.
Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
It's an 'old saying' for a darn good reason.
It is a combination of 'everything'.
Your genetics.
Your hygiene.
Your nutrition.
Your exposure.
The medicine you take.
The recreational drugs (alcohol included) that you intake.
The lifestyle you lead.
How much sleep you get.
How much Sun you get.
How much you smoke, if you do.
And most importantly, your mental state.
Well, that pubic hair can tickle one's nose, and you know what that causes.
Vaginas are arguably my source of greatest joy
Flu or not
They bring life forth too....life entrance ramp
A little mammalian nuance God obviously purred a fair amount of thought into
First, I said most women. Second this is NOT just MY experience but the experience related to me by a great many friends and acquaintances in academia, church, charitable and political clubs, electronics and medical fields, martial arts ( my hobby) and work. I am a multi degreed electronics industry professional, past president of a charitable organization and heavily involved with conservative politics. I am not a trailer park resident where one would think you most likely would find women of the type I describe. Perhaps it’s geographic or perhaps you have not been exposed to it. You are NOT a younger man. I have been with my wife (a pharmacist) for 20 years. I got VERY lucky and found a good one. However, we have a great MANY friends and family who have suffered thru what I have described especially in the academia world. I don’t blame younger women. I blame our society for making it the easy and most acceptable path for them to follow. Oh and BTW ... my wife agrees with me
Like you said, location location location.
Texas does have a different (and better) sense of values than most other states.
I am happy that you finally found a good one.
