Fukushima nuclear plant: Japan takes steps over sea leak

Japan says it is taking steps to prevent contaminated water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant leaking into the sea.

The plant's operator recently admitted for the first time that radioactive water was still going into the sea.

A government spokesman said the authorities had taken immediate action.

Workers were asked to act promptly to stop the leak as steam was seen rising from one of the reactor buildings for the second time in a week.

On Tuesday, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) said steam was seen around the fifth floor of the building housing Reactor No 3 shortly after 09:00 local time (00:00 GMT).

Workers were continuing with the ongoing operation to inject cooling water into the reactor and a pool storing nuclear fuel, it added.

It is not clear what is causing the steam, but levels of radiation around the reactor have not changed.

The sight of steam rising is worrying because it means somewhere inside the reactor building water is boiling, says the BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo.

The badly damaged reactors are supposed to be in what is called "cold shutdown"; the temperature of the cooling water inside the reactor should be well below boiling point.

It is another sign that Tepco still does not fully know what is going on inside the damaged reactors, our correspondent adds.

Steam was last seen rising from a reactor building at the plant on 18 July.

The plant was crippled by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011, which knocked out cooling systems to the reactors, three of which melted down. Leak

On Monday, Tepco said the plant was likely to be leaking contaminated water into the sea, something that has been suspected for some time, but previously denied by the company.

The radioactive fuel escaped containment and lies "somewhere" in the ground beneath each of the power plants. Not knowing where it is or what to do about it, Japan announced that it had achieved "cold shutdown" as if the fuel was under it's control and still in a containment vessel. Now steam is escaping from the remains of reactor 3. The only way for that to happen is if the radioactive fuel is once again hot enough to boil water. So a nuclear reaction hot enough to boil water is now taking place somewhere in the ground beneath reactor 3. Many people believe that Fukushima "was" a disaster that happened 2 years ago but in fact it has not ended (the end is not in sight) and continues to emit radiation freely into the environment and now a portion of the fuel is hot enough to boil water.

From the article: "Outside experts have long suspected that the damaged reactors are leaking water, because of the very high levels of radioactive caesium still being found in samples of fish taken near the plant."

And fish contaminated with Fukushima radiation were captured in San Diego 5 months after the tsunami and explosion at the nuclear power plant. All 15 of the 15 fish sampled had small amounts of the Fukushima contaminants and the plant has continued to release radiation for 2 years now.

IF ONLY they had the good sense to frantically search for more batteries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that should have been priority 1

if they had kept the thing on batteries until they could get a generator in, this would have been hailed as a success story of epic proportions (surviving BOTH an giant earthquake AND a a giant Tsunami on the same day)

They declined foreign offers to fly in back up generators and drove through damaged streets to a retail outlet but didn’t have funds to purchase enough batteries or back up generators!

Here’s a link explaining it:

In addition, TEPCO arranged to buy batteries in bulk but didnt have a permit to transport them. This is also covered in the linked article. The article laments that these kind of technicalities played such a role in a disaster of this scale. :(

PS: It doesn’t seem to be a question of the store but a cultural expectation that the workers felt it would not be correct to take things without paying for them.

We knew long ago that much more water was being dumped in than what was being collected out. Anyone with half a brain knew a long time ago that this contaminated water was going into the Ocean.

Yes - it was obvious. But the nuclear power industry has found by experiences with prior experience that lying about it when it is obvious tends to work. Later, as in years later, they may be forced to admit it but many people seem to actually believe the “happier” reports initially released and aren’t around, looking for information when the truth is finally officially documented, if ever.

I believe that Japan simply intends to flush their radiation into the air and ocean so it’s not their problem anymore. They don’t care if we are down wind or share the oceans - they want it off their hands and rinsing it into the ocean and sending into the air by burning radioactive debris is their plan.
