Yup. Liberally educated and lived like a hermit for decades. Moved closer to civilization, and, while building our home, happened across some chap named Limbaugh. That was back in ‘91. “There is nothing worse than a reformed smoker” is a simile that comes to mind.
Nice try chum but that ain’t no big band. Ahem hem.
That was the one.
7th grade for me. I try to put myself in my grandparents place and imagine if they felt about the culture and country as I do now.
Riots, Protests, War and assassinations. It was a tumultuous time.
The reason for this was the baby boom and boredom. At the end of WWII, there was an explosion of suburbs especially in the new, western cities. But except for a few broadcast TV channels, and movie theaters, the radio was where young people could get entertainment.
And with few amenities, you could buy instruments, so garage bands proliferated. Of course most groups wanted to sound either like the Beatles or Pink Floyd, but the competition was fierce. If you could make it to either coast, your group had a chance.
Here is a website that streams many of the “also-rans” of the period. It is pretty entertaining if you are in that kind of mood:

I got to see Bull Moose Jackson perform in DC in 1979. He opened by singing standards like Vic Damone’s “I could Have Danced All Night” and got polite applause, but when he launched into the song you featured, the crowd went wild.
It is big though...Ten inches, in fact.
Nobody’s mentioned Sinatra here but I thought I’d point out that nearly everything I’ve heard him sing is about a one night stand that he swears he’ll never forget.
But don't forget, Annie Lennox also produced a rendition.
Love Annie!
My nominee for crack up of the night. Thanks!
Sinatra is a real talent...but he’s a small time skunk at heart (soul).

White Bird released in '68 by "It's A Beautiful Day", David Laflamme - vocals and violin; Pattie Santos - vocals.
Who Knows Where the Time Goes by Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson on guitar.
I feel bad for you. Your missing something.
Really. Nearly everything you heard he sang was about a one night stand. In the 1930s and 40s. I bet you can’t name three. In fact I bet you can’t name one.
I disagree, but perhaps you can post links to some of the best...and win us over.
Otherwise, what good are your empty opinions. Convince us, Man!
Where's the evidence?
Awesome made my day. That guy can still really belt out a tune..
The music speaks for itself. If you don’t like it you never will, so I won’t waste my time trying to win anyone over. There will never be a greater time for music then that of the big bands. The swing era. Too bad you missed out.
While all of that hullabaloo was going on in DC, I was sitting on the western slope of Fiji Hill struggling with Russian participles, reading the works of Gothold E. Lessing—and sneaking out in the middle of the night to put up posters attacking liberal speakers such as Earl Warren.
Listen take your time scouring the net for those one night stand Sinatra songs from the 30s and 40s that was nearly everything you heard him sing. Just saying.
Whiter Shade racist bump
