The 870 is good enough for many purposes.

By way of comparison, the Xtrema 2:

• Is much faster than previous semiauto guns; you can't pull the trigger fast enough to make it jam or malfunction.
• Has a heavy spring and bleedoff valve: you can shoot light target loads one day and geese the next, without needing to change anything other than the ammo.
• Has 3.5" chambers; i.e. can shoot any 12ga ammo.
• Is entirely stainless and man-made materials; you can leave it in water for a week, pull it out, and shoot it. Wet conditions in Md. or Delaware can't hurt it.
• Is advertised as self-cleaning and that isn't much of a lie. You still need to clean the barrel but the rest is very easy to clean.

The Xtrema 2 can serve any purpose there is for a shotgun.

By way of contrast, I've seen people going nuts trying to shoot target shells with Benelli guns.

Good choices for both of you. I used to shoot with a guy that shot nothing but 870’s and he could cycle that gun so fast that the spent hull was about a foot from the gun when he fired the second round. He probably put 5-6000 rounds a year through his guns.

The Beretta autos are also great (although the Benelli’s give them a run for the money). My current Sporting 12 is a 391 Urika 2 Trap model.

I love my fancy and collectible guns, but you’re right, you don’t need to pop for $2K or more to get the job done.
