Hany Mustapha, 46, from Worcester Park, Surrey, had just picked up a 21ft sloop bought through eBay and set sail in strong winds from Poole, Dorset, running into trouble minutes later.

The yacht was discovered 'ghosting' hours later, running aground deserted on the Isle of Wight with its engine still running.

...

Mr Mustapha was a member of a local motor yachting club on the River Thames and had completed a one-week sailing course with his second wife, Liz, in Turkey in 2011.

He was also studying for his Master Yachtsman certificate in his spare time.

However, the coroner said he had 'over-estimated his ability' when he attempted to sail single-handed...

Cold winds were almost at gale force strength, throwing up 15ft waves as Mr Mustapha ventured out on his solo voyage aboard his new boat

Ah, that's how.

Things have really deteriorated in GB if a 21' sloop is now a "yacht".

Reminds me of obozo's plans for the U.S. Navy:

Photobucket

Armed with a single MA-2 .50 caliber Browning, this much feared naval vessel carries up to 30 rounds of aluminum piercing ammunition. It is the first in an entirely new naval architecture class -- technically, “clitoral” (not to be confused with “littoral”) -- being pushed on the Pentagon by the defense minded wussies in the Obama Administration as a cost-saving measure. If you look closely, you can see the heavy-duty seat restraint which prevents the pilot/gunner – Kamakazi Kowalski – from leaping from the vessel prior to engaging the enemy. The 12 V trolling motor – which lacks a reverse function -- propels this sophisticated craft forward at a top speed of 4 knots. Reverse travel – at approximately 35 knots -- is achieved by firing the Browning.

The no-bid contract to build 200 of these fearsome warships was to have been awarded to Obama-Soros-Emanuel Shipbuilding and Stormdoor Manufacturing (formerly General Dynamics) and will be administered by trusted Obama associate and former Chief-of-Staff Rahm Emanuel who commented that, at $12 million each, they are a bargain. They will be constructed exclusively at the company’s facility in Kenya with major subcomponent production (rivets and miscellaneous fasteners) at the company’s Harlem and Skokie plants. Delivery is expected to begin in 2024 (or as soon as the subcontractors’ funds are safely in the contractor's Swiss account).

A 21 foot sailboat is not a yacht.

Sad story, prayers for his loved ones. May someone take a lesson from this tragedy.

“Set sail” and “engines running” does not compute...

Hany, old boy, I knew Joshua Slocum and you’re no Joshua Slocum.

You might be able to finesse your way up the corporate ladder, impressing people along the way with your skillset and qualifications, but the sea is not amused. It will quickly find your weak spot.

The yacht was discovered 'ghosting' hours later, running aground deserted on the Isle of Wight....

Authorities are said to be deciding whether the island should be charged with a racist hate crime.

I wouldn’t try it in a boat under 30ft, and 35-50 would be be my choice. Actually, 46ft is just perfect. Hopefully, I will head to Belize this winter.;)

A lot of things don’t make sense....

He is a wealthy businessman.... spends only £900 on a boat to carry him and his wife around the world ......... and ....

The father of two was wearing a basic buoyancy aid instead of a self-inflating lifejacket at the time.

He was also wearing ‘inappropriate’ trainers instead of non-slip boating shoes and had not connected himself to the ‘kill cord’ which would have cut power to the engine when he fell overboard, the coroner heard.
