German word for “man” is “schwartz” (Ang. prn.: “shvahtz”).

The question to be answered is, what is the German transliteration (to Anglo) of the suffix “-mann”?

-mann translates to “manly or heroic”, “male person”, or “servant of”.

So Zimmerman would likely be “room servant”.
