Dry asparagus prompts questions about racial discrimination in U. City
St. Louis Post Disgrace ^ | 7/17/13 | Stephen Deere

UNIVERSITY CITY • A dried-out batch of asparagus has touched off a debate about racial discrimination, grocery stores and the role of citizen-led commissions.

It started in May when resident David Olander was perusing the produce section of the University City Schnucks. He noticed the asparagus weren’t resting in a tray of water.

“It was just sitting there dried out,” said Olander, a member of the city’s human relations commission.

Olander summoned an assistant manager, and then he asked the question: Did the quality of the asparagus have any relationship to the store’s location in a black neighborhood?

A liberal Jewish Do-gooder :-( makes me sick to know he has nothing better to do with his time. Schnucks is a TOP-SHELF grocer. All of their stores do a tremendous volume and have great produce. He evidently caught them on a bad day or the store produce manager needed retraining.

I have been in many of their stores in St. Louis and they do a great job of marketing. My favorite store is their new Des Peres store.

The store would have been in SERIOUS doo-doo if they only sold WHITE asparagus.

Of note, the local Walmart only sells the green version, never standing in water, but the local Whole Foods sells green and white, both standing in the water.

Conclusion: Walmart be DOUBLE racist

I don’t think I’ve been in the Des Peres store, I live on The Hill and visit the Arsenal store. Schnucks are good stores and good people.

“envelopea” = the post office

Actually, "Envelopea" is a very large, undiscovered island/small continent in the Indian Ocean.

Walmartian has disclosed its secret. It is the equivalent of the Witness Protection haven for lost, mis-routed or undelivered mail.

For all these years, all those much maligned people were actually telling the truth. The check WAS in the mail!

More exactly, it was leaning back in a hammock, sipping an adult beverage and looking out at the tropical sea surrounding the Republic of Envelopea.

(yes, no need to ask. I am a bit off my rocker!)

I’d say it was time for that grocery store to get the heck out of dodge and let the people starve and take it up with this fruitcake.

Food desert!

( though even in California I have never seen asparagus displayed that way....it is usually just in the veggie case near the greens and celery with occasional sprayers going off)

Interesting. I’ve never seen bundles of it _not_ in a water bath. Even the local farmstands put ‘em in water.

To be honest, though, I did see a farmstand in MI that just had a tub full of loose asparagus with a scale nearby — kind of a bundle your own operation and a LOT cheaper. I don’t see it loose around here; ever.

Was the stuff you saw in the veggie case loose or bundled?

Thinking about it further, the reason the asparagus were shriveled was that no one bought them for a long time. Disinterest, not racism.

” he asked the question: Did the quality of the asparagus have any relationship to the store’s location in a black neighborhood?”

Only in that the quality of service in a retail store is directly proportional to the surroundings from which it acquires employees.
