Netflix has “For Whom the Bell Tolls” in both DVD and instant viewing formats. Crowther calls it the best film of the year, which says as much about the year as the film. I enjoyed the film but I wouldn’t go quite as far as Crowther in praise of the actors. The two stars do a good enough job and it was only once or twice that I got a sense of “Mr. Deeds Goes to Spain” from Gary Cooper.
