Dallas ISD Police Chief Craig Miller reiterated Thursday that he is not a fan of a new law that allows for designated armed employees, or “marshals,” in Texas schools and said that his district will not participate in the optional program.
“I question giving a teacher a couple weeks’ training with a gun and saying go out there and do the job” that is extremely challenging even for highly trained veteran officers, Miller said. He was the keynote speaker at the monthly North Texas Crime Commission breakfast at Prestonwood Country Club in Far North Dallas.
Early indications are that several other North Texas school districts intend to follow DISD’s lead. Officials with Highland Park, Lewisville, McKinney, Duncanville, Grand Prairie and Rockwall school districts all said Thursday that they have no plans to join the program.

Here in my neck of the woods that's exactly what they do with rookie police officers.
The US Army has for centuries, we given a bunch of 18 year old kids a few weeks training, put a rifle in their hands and told them to go do their jobs.

It is not an either or situation.
I believe it was in 1966 when a madman climbed a tower in a Texas university and began killing people.
Except one off duty policeman, the entire “swat” team that took this man down were all civilians using their own weapons.
The idea that only police should have guns is a dangerous one.
One just needs the means to do so!

A few weeks of training on a handgun or basic rifle is way more than enough. You can get reasonably proficient in basic use in a matter of 8 hours with the right instructor. Guns aren’t complicated to use.
Dallas PD chief is highly political, in a city dominated by Dems on the council. The PD lowered the crime rate by reclassifying certain crimes as ticketing misdemeanors so they would not be reported and the police would not have to respond.
His actual response would be, we want the schools to continue to hire off-duty officers to keep the rank and file happy since thy hate my guts.

They all start with training and gather experience as they go.

The problem here is the problem with police everywhere , they don’t want anyone infringing on their private right to be the only ones with guns. They see it as a threat to their jobs.
The worst possible scenario played out in Newtown. A nut with a gun and nobody able to shoot back.
I fail to see how even a really poorly trained teacher with a gun could have made the situation worse.
Now, if we arm a bunch of teachers across the country, the law of large numbers means eventually one of them will misuse the gun, intentionally or accidentally. And then the outcry will go up to make the schools "gun-free" again.
The problem is that the chance of accidental or intentional misuse is the price we pay for reducing the probability of another Newtown or Columbine.
Americans are so childish. They refuse to recognize that tradeoffs are inevitable, as if it is possible to have ultimate freedom and ultimate safety at the same time.
LOL - an Infantryman only gets 16 weeks of training to take a raw recruit, get the to learn how to march, first aid, multiple weapon systems, tactics, and a whole bunch of basic military protocol. In that time, I received maybe 4 hrs of training on a pistol.
Okay, the fact that a school district has a police chief tells you there’s already a problem, right?
I don’t recall any training on pistols in basic combat training. M-16, M-60 and the Light Anti-tank Weapon are all I remember.
We got a class on the 1911. Mostly disassemble and cleaning. No range time. No weapons issued (like the M16).
It is especially hard to to the police job in school, because there are no dogs there to shoot.
They probably have a whole training course on how to shoot your weapon while eating a donut.
And it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert at anything, so most police never get close to actually being expert. They just muddle through.
A lot of police never have to fire their weapon at all.
Plus, we aren’t asking teachers to DO THE JOB that police do, most of which is to interact with fellow citizens. It is rare that the police know they are confronting an armed criminal, and when they think they are, they have shown that they mostly just pull out their guns and shoot wildly.
The teachers will only use their weapons if there already is someone shooting in a school. At that point, the decision-making is pretty simple.
