15-year-old recovering from 100 puncture wounds after pit bull puppies attack

NORTHEAST HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- A 15-year-old old girl is recovering from more than 100 puncture wounds on one leg and slashes on the other after a vicious dog attack in her own backyard.

Deputies said her own two pit bull puppies turned on her in an instant.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. in the 12000 block of N. San Circle Drive. According to investigators, the teenager was giving the puppies food and water when they lunged at her.

The two 8-month-old dogs had the girl pinned on the ground and were reportedly biting her repeatedly.

Family members were able to pry the aggressive pets off of Kasandra Benavides before things got worse.

“She was screaming, I’m going to die,” said neighbor Lucero Almazan.

Benavides was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital where doctors stitched her up. Doctors expect it’ll be a while before she can walk again.

“She’s got a lot of pain,” explained father Juan Ruiz. “I don’t want these dogs back to my house.”

The girl’s father Juan Ruiz said his daughter helped raise the puppies since they were four weeks old. He claims the dogs have never displayed any signs of aggression.

A neighbor, who wants to remain anonymous, has a different take on things.

“Those two dogs killed the neighbor’s dog,” said the neighbor.

The neighbor claims these same two pit bulls recently killed a shih tzu in their mobile home community.

“We were all startled, and I was concerned for the safety our children,” she said.

The two pit bulls are now in quarantine at Harris County Animal Control.

What is it with these dogs?

25 years ago I never saw any of them, now whenever I go walking in the city some lowlife is walking one or more of them.

Can’t speak for Animals, the human kind, have done to the breed but here is some info:

I don’t defend the dogs that did this, but the entire breed should not be condemned.

Pit bulls - very destructive breed. My dog was nearly killed by a pit bull a few months ago. The vet said that pit bulls at the dog park pretty much keep the emergency vet clinics in business.

A pit bull may not show any signs of aggression, until it does. And when it does, it can be life altering.

No that is being facetious, they are animals, the product of breeding and environment. Any dog or animal can be bred to vicious. The Russians bred, I think minks, one group bred to be very aggressive and the other to be very timid. With the aggressive group they could hardly get near the cages. All I’m saying is that individual people destroy individual lines within a breed, it is not that the breed is inherently bad.

I don't condemn the breed, but I do recognize that they were originally bred to have the aggressive hunter killer instincts most of them exhibit.

In my view the so-called Pit Bull terrier is an exotic breed of animal that is only marginally suitable for ordinary domestic ownership. I'm of the opinion that they should be kept in the same way that people keep other dangerous animals, that is, under strict regulatory guidelines, permitting, kenneling, etc.

They did everything wrong, right out of the gate.

Four weeks old is -too young-, no matter the breed and they created monsters with littermate syndrome.

The dogs will *always* be “us against you”.

Stupid owners.

Check the history of Pitbulls in America before you make a statement like that. The pit bull terrier was THE family dog in America in 20’s 30’s and even into the forties, but I’m guessing your not old enough to remember The Little Rascals or Spanky and Our Gang. The Pit bull Terrierier is not an exotic breed by any stretch of the imagination. And I and my Mastador interact with at least five or six every time we go to the dog park. And the biggest trouble makers I have had to deal with are small dogs that start fights, not the Pit Bulls.

Yep. If you take on the responsibility of a dog, you need to take the time to learn how to raise and train it *right*.

A breed is not a living animal. It is perfectly safe and reasonable to conclude that the breed is genetically defective, and terminate it by simply neutering all the present dogs that are part of that breed. You don't need to kill the dogs, unless they ask for it. Just don't make more of them. Dogs' lifespan is short enough, and dogs are not going to worry about the future of their breed. Even humans largely don't worry about their own species...

Otherwise one would be able to ask a perfectly valid question: how many human children would a proponent of the breed be willing to feed to the dogs, just to keep a certain set of angry genes around? Is the breed valuable in some unique way, outside of dogfighting? What does the humanity gain from this breed? (It's already obvious what it is losing.)

I’ve found that all dogs have their own personality. At the moment, I only have 3 dogs. A full pit named “puppy”, a 1/2 rott 1/4 pit 1/4 healer named “squirt” and his mom 1/2 pit 1/2 healer named “shitty.”
Puppy is the mellowest. She got her name because at one time she was the puppy.
Squirt reacts to everything around and was named because at one time he was the smallest but no more.
Shitty, she’s my mean one. She got her name because she’d always sneak into another room and shit. We knew it was her but could never catch until one day out the corner of my eye I caught her and since then she’s never crapped again.
Shitty is in the house 24/7 except to crap and pee. The other 2 are outside all day and brought in at night.
My dogs have never socialized with outside dogs or people and probably would bite but it is my responsibility to control them.
Puppy, the full pit is overly friendly to people she knows but either way as an owner it is my responsibility to keep them confined and away from strangers and other dogs.

Insert human being where placed breed and it makes as much sense as what you propose. God's creatures man or animal deserve better. NO I don't see animals as equal to man, loony I am not, but I do believe it is mans responsibility to care for animals. Dogs were bred to serve man and they will give unconditional love. You want to destroy a breed because SOME men are greater animals than the dogs. Sorry I just see that as cruel and heartless and not dealing with the issue. If you get rid of the pits, probably as successful as libs getting rid of guns, some other breed will be abused in their place.

Pit bulls were not bred to ‘attack’ anything.

They were created to grab and hold dangerous livestock so that the drover/farmer was kept safe from.

No one would create a dog who would damage/injure their expensive livestock by ‘attacking’ it.

I can’t understand why people won’t bother to look up the histories of any breed of dog.

People did to this them and people should pay the price.

Dumb animals should not suffer for the sins of trash humans.

FYI, the *only* breed ‘created to attack people’ are Dobermanns.

Forty years with ‘em and I’ve never even had a nip.

Not from ‘well bred show kennel dogs’ *or* the dozens of rescues from God-knows-where that I rehabilitated for adoption.

As a teen, I spent my summer days lounging in my back yard with two *intact* males who never misbehaved.

During my rescue years, I’d have 3 or 4 Dobes wandering freely in the house, every one of them coexisting with the other, peacefully.

*I* did that.
*I* made the difference.

This video says it all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoDnrPH5XXI

A moron is goading a bull and suffers the consequences and some dog he doesn’t even know saves his sorry ass.

If not for that gutsy little dog doing what he was born to do, he’d be -dead-.
