A gentleman in our parish flew a plane in the Sicily invasion (also D-Day and other battles). He tells some amazing and heart-wrenching stories. During the Sicily invasion, our ships fired on his formation (the Germans had just completed an aerial attack on our fleet a few minutes before and our sailors thought the bad guys were returning). Some of our planes where shot down.
On Veterans Day, he talks with the kids at the parish school, so at least they get some sense of what WWII was like.
