If Putin were actually a Communist, it would make no sense for him to revive the influence of Russia's traditional Orthodox Christian religion. One can pretend to be something one is not, of course; but the hard-boiled pragmatist would not revive a force that could rally a people against such a secret agenda as your comment suggests.
There is plenty of evidence that Putin has genuinely embraced traditional Russian--pre-Communist values.
