I must do my fellow Freepers, and the Walt Disney Company, a service.......
We are pretty rough on the Walt Disney Company, Disney World and Disneyland, their movies and animations.....so I feel I must post this commentary when they do something right......
"Oz The Great And Powerful" will be a timeless classic that will run for as many years as the original "Wizard Of Oz"
I have just watched it for the first time, and it was clear when it was over, you could watch it again and again...
The casting, acting and story are perfect. It sets up the original story like it was made before it.
The characters are real, touching and perfectly acted.
To highlight just a few, the male lead, (James Franco) and the lady from the Mummy, (Rachel Weisz) as one of the evil witches are both great, believable, (for a fantasy) and played with the understatement that you don't often find in this type of film.
What I am saying is that this is a wonderful film: don't deprive yourself of it just because you may not be happy with Disney.....
This is a family film, and everyone will find something to like, (it does have a scary shot when the flying apes appear out of a cloud) but be advised, it will entertain you, allow you to accept the characters and the premise, and most certainly make some tear up.....
See it and enjoy it if this is the kind of film you can enjoy......did I say it was great...
Getting galded is no fun.
no pics of being galded hopefully
Well, in the original Oz books, the character of the Wizard before the arrival of Dorothy was quite ambiguous.
I’ve watched the movie three times.
It’s a beautiful, entertaining piece of filmmaking.
The lead character is supposed to be questionable as a hero. That’s the story. He’s not presented as heroic and admits that of himself.
But at the end he decides to devote himself to one woman, who is not an evil witch but a good one.
And he saves an entire people by his ingenuity and tenacity. And he allows the good witch to influence him to do this good thing, whereas in the movie’s beginning she (her other self back in Kansas) was unable to do so although she tried.
As for the evil witches, you have to credit that they deserved everything they got because they weren’t simply flawed characters as he was, but truly evil.
Now one of the sister witches wasn’t nearly as evil as the other, but neither was she as good as the first glimpse of her character seemed to project. As the story progressed her inherent weaknesses and susceptibilities to self-deception and impulsive, self-pitying actions drove her to become the most evil of all.
I can honestly say I have no interest in being 4-oxalomesaconate tautomerase (enzyme commissioner # GalD).
wow. You have talent (on loan from Gald?)
We purchased it and watched it three times at home. My daughter saw it in the theaters in 3-D and said it was even more amazing. It is family friendly for all ages
You both make this movie sound very interesting and entertaining. I’m not a big Wizard of Oz fan, but I’ll check it out.
There were parts of the movie that I liked, but in the whole, I was very disappointed. I thought the Wizard was sleazy!
What I didn't like about Franco's Oz was that in the original movie, Professor Marvel/Wizard (Frank Morgan) was a fast-talking flim-flam man whose dialog as full of quips and witty banter not unlike Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark and/or Sherlock Holmes.
The dialog of Franco's Oz was dull and plodding in comparison.
...both of whom he seduced and abandoned...
It's true that he seduced Theodora, (Mila Kunis) but he did not seduce Evanora. (Rachel Weisz)
Evanora lied and only led Theodora to believe this so that her heart would be turned against Oz and to evil.
See: Evanora the Wicked Witch of the East
All this being said, I still liked the movie overall and how it tied into the original.
i loved the first one
i loved the second one
Wow. You must have seen a diffrent movie the we did. Both my wife and I thought the movie SUCKED big time. Nothing about it was good.
There weren’t two different movies.
Just very different people watching and commenting.
I loved the fantasy aspects and the special effects. I usually like Franco, but in this, I thought he was very weak. I enjoyed it, but it’s not on my top ten of great movies. Stacked up against the original, it falls short.
Agree with your comments, exception to the last one that compares/contrasts it with the orignal movie. For me, it is so different and distinct from the original, my mind won’t even try to go there. I consider them entirely seperate and judge them accordingly.
orignal = original
Believable? Unless the fairy-tale versions make more sense to one.
