Leyland didn’t manage as he would a normal game. He said he would rather play with the team he got and play the whole game with it but everybody wants to see their players play.
And the only RBI hit was from Jason Kipnis, the only Indian to appear in the game. :)
Also more deserving than Mo. It’s really an indefensible choice, or the only defense is “ah who cares”.
The Tribe is pretty good, hanging with D-troit.
Sale in ASG and beating Verlander last week has been the highlight of the Sox miserable season so far. ;d
let me see if I understand the all-star game:
1. The AL pitchers put on a PITCHING CLINIC. Superb.
2. The managers took a passage approach with no in-game managerial moves. Bochy did the pinch-run with McCutchen. His only move.
3. If you bring up point 2, you will hear, “don’t take the game seriously ... it is mostly an exhibition.”
I guess it is an exhibition. An exhibition of superb pitching and disinterested managing. The pitchers bring their A-game, why not the managers? ... a la Scioscia 2003.
(Speaking of Kipnis, Bochy coulda saved Chapman for Kipnis-Machado-Fielder in the 8th-9th instead of facing 3 Righty bats.
(PS. I didn’t like anything Bochy did. Cuz he did nothing. No pinch-hitting, or matching up his pitchers vs. AL batters. Except the pinch-run with McCutchen. I didn’t like Leyland’s performance either, which is no surprise. he has said in the past that he does not like to manage all-star games.)
I get the impression that most managers are annoyed with the task of the All-star game. Or maybe they have a “just let the stars do their thing” mentality.
I’m with you I’d have liked to see them be more active, why not.
Verlander is working on his mechanics as he loses velocity with age. Some would say he’s struggling but he’s actually getting more strikeouts compared to his old pitch to contact style. I was glad to see that Leyland didn’t feel the obligation to put him on the mound.
I just feel like the all star game is too much about getting players from every team which forces a manager to get everybody into play at some point. I’d rather see it played as a regular game and I would have sent Scherzer and Cabrera with Fielder and Hunter as reserves who may or may not play.
Painful listening.
Ugh, I agree. Can't stand it when these singers make it all about them and not about simply singing our National Anthem in a respectful manner.
"Look at ME! Look at ME!" Grr...
She repeatedly belted out flat notes too.
Yeah they want everyone to watch so they want every team to be there.
That often means less deserving players are selected just cause they’re team has to have 1 representative. I don’t like it.
Chicago legend Lillibridge was starting 3B for Yankees tonite. Keeping the spot filled until the other legend (A-Rod) returns next week ...
Inexplicably, the Sox walked him.
Fitting that Lillibridge and Youk both end up with the Yanks a year after the TRADE! How often does that happen!?
On a lighter note, the heat wave ends in 24 hours. At least in my zip code.
Probably happens more often than you think. Or not, beats me. I still don’t know why the Yankees wanted Sillybridge. I guess A-Rod and Braun won’t get suspended till next year.
We had a huge storm, took some bite out of the heat. Tomorrow night it’s sposed to drop into the 60’s.
Your boy, Pedro Beato won last night - did you get an irma tingle?
no tingle cuz I fell asleep in the 8th. Beato: the former Orioles big prospect and Rule 5 find of the mEtsies.
Sillybridge led off the 9th with a single and was stranded.
The daily Yankee roster juggling is unique ... there are better players buried down in AAA who will never get a shot. Yanks would love to have ‘em. Nobody wantsa trade wid NYY?
Sox were so loaded with pitching in early June dat they let 3 minor league pitchers go ... now they are desparate ... Jose Contreras, et al. YA NEVER NEVER NEVER have 2 much pitching, right?
Farrell is over-rated as manager and cannot win with this team. The Cubs have a bright future. The B-Mets are a powerhouse. Red Sox (seadogs) are in town tonite.
“Farrell is over-rated as manager and cannot win with this team.”
Have to mildly disagree with that. Farrell is a competent, professional, MLB manager - someone that was missing last year. No way would Valentine have the same results with this year’s team. The RS need bullpen help for sure.
Let’s see what happens.
Good call on the NYY: who wants their overpriced players? No one at all.
a lot of teams need bullpen help.
And they need plenty of other help, too. The point is that they are resourceful and win despite their flaws. I have no confidence that Farrell can win with a flawed team. Not based on what I’ve seen, which is a passive in-game style.
The red sox are now a flawed team.
NYY want to trade minor league prospects for a major league infielder to solidify 3rd and SS. Nobody willing to trade with them.
Right - there is no “uber” team this year - all are flawed. But do you not think Farrell is a better manager than Valentine? Last year was a bad circus act.
No one is going to help the NYY. I’m waiting for them to try to void the remainder of A-Roid’s deal.
BREAKING: Ryan Braun suspended for the rest of the 2013 season.
The Brewers are behind the Cubs now, in last place in the central. Only the Astros, Marlins and White Sox have worse records.
I say suspend him next year when it may matter.
Brewers, Cubs, Astros, Marlins and White Sox - all discount whores.
“I say suspend him next year when it may matter.”
Damn right! Braun negotiated his own suspension. Way to go MLB - what a farce.
Looks like I’m down to the NHL for quasi-clean sports fun.
Yeah it’s a crap punishment, he was mostly injured this year wasn’t he? Team in last place, his pay goes up next year, he wipes his butt with 3 mil he’ll lose this year.
It’s being reported the Spankees are interested in adding another overpriced player, Alfonso Soriano. Of course they’ll want the Cubs to pick up most of the tab.
“Spankees...Alfonso Soriano...Of course theyll want the Cubs to pick up most of the tab.”
A player without a position. At least he can DH in the AL.
I suspect the trend in MLB is going to be: younger than 30-32 y/o, players will get paid. After that, assume the players are juiced in some form and pay according to the risk of them being suspended.
The juicing that led to big salaries in the past will be the cause of salaries going down and players getting retired now and going forward.
