The Lone Ranger: A First Look
July 2nd, 2013 | Me

Posted on 07/02/2013 8:45:56 AM PDT by Allah AtBar

I attended a screener of the Lone Ranger movie last night, the director Gore Verbinski dropped by and introduced the opening of the film. In summary (and without spoilers): The Lone Ranger character starts out as weak and naive and ends the movie as a weak and naive but now following Tonto. I struggle to remember if any of the white male characters were portrayed as anything other than evil, racist, greedy, inept, or religious zealots. Even the military is not spared; the cavalry captain is portrayed as Hollywood’s stereotypical ”General Custer” type replete with Van Dyke beard and long hair. Other irritations: The band is knocked off the stage while playing the Star Spangled Banner, only the villains speak of love for god and country, only the evil characters use guns to kill people and even Gettysburg is mentioned but only as a rational of why the bad guy is bad. This is not a movie to see during the week of July 4th.

As for me, I never much cared for effeminate pirates with eyeliner. Not my idea of the Leading Man at all. Can Depp, at least in his pirate persona, even be called a leading man?.

I really don’t go out to watch movies anymore, but I have to admit that the little frenchman, Johnny Depp, has a knack of providing me a chuckle or two. So he gets a thumbs up from me as far as an entertainer goes. Whether or not this movie is dud, I don’t know, but historically I’ve liked his movies - so if it ever makes the TV circuit, I’ll watch it.

Actually, Johnny Depp does not reprise his Pirate’s character and plays the role rather “straight”. I am not a Johnny Depp fan, but his character and humor are actually one of the few redeeming qualities of the movie. Other redeeming aspects include the scenery and set locations, amazing special effects and the use of the William Tell Overture during the finale.

Ansara is one of those guys who, no matter how much makeup, you know exactly who he is when he speaks.

No doubt. I believe he is 91 now...wonder if his voice still projects like that...

Another one goes down the toilet.
No doubt, Hollyweird expects to make it up abroad.

When the wife and I saw an ad where the Lone Ranger and Tonto were attempting to blow-up a railway span, my wife and I looked at each other and said, “The Lone Ranger doesn’t blow-up sh!t!”

Up until that time, we wanted to see it, because we were hoping that it would be good. After that, we decided to wait until it makes it to Netflix!

You just can’t outmatch Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger.

Here he is as the Lone Ranger with Tonto in a early 1970’s Aqua Velva commercial. Good stuff.

I just thought Indians would be too smart to walk around with a rotting, festering, disease and maggot infested bird stinking up their heads.

Real Indians might. But we're talking about Depp.

When did Tonto start looking like Jambi from Pee Wee’s Playhouse?

Wow, great find, O.E.O.

I totally agree with you, Buckeye, it seems very disrespectful and ludicrous.

That was quite surreal. It reminded me of the parody of a German folk tale, “The Woodsman and his Hairy Daughters”, by Tony Hendra.

The story ended up: “Immediately the woodsman, invoking the name of the adder’s second head, became a bear and, catching up the hedgehog, threw it into the air, whereupon it became a woodpecker and pecked out the eyes of the head, which spat out the lips of his first daughter, which ordered the thousand pieces of the third daughter’s body to dance forevermore. Meanwhile the bear became a wild duck and flew away with the poisoned herring, and the severed head ate itself.”

My impression is the film is as much related to the story of the Lone Ranger as the 1960’s Batman TV series was to the comic book Caped Crusader. Parody and camp, Johnny Depp’s specialty so of course he’s the star, and not to be taken seriously.

Lone Ranger movie directed by Roland Emmerich with Johnny Depp “starring” as Tonto? A Criterion Collection nominee, for sure!

Whoever came up with that must have gorged himself on those funny spotted mushrooms growing out in the Schwartzwald.

Cringeworthy. Johnny Depp doing a performance in “black face” Hollywood couldn’t find another Jay Silver Heels?
