Yeah, as little kids we hadn’t a real clue. But by the time we were in our teens we knew.
During the Cuban Missile Crisis I remember JFK speaking to the nation. My Dad made us sit around and pay attention.
In Superior, AZ, the plan was to take the entire town of 4,000 into the mine 500 level with people bringing their own stash of food. Not real well thought out but even Phoenix then was not considered a real likely target and it is 65 miles away. The mine, along with its sister mine in San Manuel did produce some 10% of the copper used in the USA though. Now, with the mines mostly closed, Superior would be a good spot to sit things out.

I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis vividly. I stood near a line of teletype machines from various newswire services, monitoring the progress of the Soviet ships as they neared our Naval blockade. I wondered if I had time to get home to be with my wife and children before Soviet ICBMs delivered Hell (I lived near a Strategic Air Command base, a very likely target.)
There was an audible sigh of relief from everyone nearby when the teletypes clacked out the news that the Russian ships had turned away from the blockade. That's as close to an all-out nuclear war as I ever want to come.
Just made identifying the bodies easier,, we lined up in the hallways by alphabetical order.
You had an up close experience.
One of my Dad’s World War II buddies was a B-52 pilot. He visited us a few months after it was over and said it was damned scary.
In those days we were all “Americans”. My Dad used the term “Red blooded American” all the time.
,,, into the 50s for grade school. I remember the” get under your desk and cover your neck with your hands” drills.

Likewise grade school 40’s/50’s and remember the ‘Fall Out Shelters’. When I went to Boot Camp (Navy) in ‘56 after 1 ABC instruction period/class, I decided to NEVER trust an adult again, no matter what they said - if they could ‘lie’ about the desk and covering your head was adequate ‘protection’, they would be able to lie about anything. Of course in ‘54 they were still having Sailors on the OPEN DECKS of ships face away from a nuclear blast - Oh yes, make sure your pants were tucked in your socks and shirt sleeves and collars buttoned and have your counter on....
I was at either the Pentagon or NAVCOMMSTA Cheltenham during Bay of Pigs and Kennedy Assassination .. some ‘fun’ times but I don’t remember any ‘panic’ on our part, Just doing our job.....
My dad built one. It was comforting for a young kid. We had some of our most interesting conversations about life when I sat and talked to him as he laid bricks.
I was in 3rd grade, and my father was preparing some sort of shelter for us, just in case.
He actually had sand bags covered over the celler window.Actaully more like a root celler. Mom and dad had all sorts of food stuff, (powdered eggs and milk), freshly canned fruit, and tomatoes.
I still remember my mom and dad discussing if they should send us to school that day. They did but daddy promised if anything happened he would come and get us.

The women, on the other hand, knew how to live. Dresses light as a feather, usually reclining by the pool with a drink of wine in their petite little hands, without a care in the world. All Jackie style.
