I got this out of the library and made it through Themistocles and part of Belisarius. Hanson is a terrific researcher and analyst, but he is a clunky writer, plagued by random modifiers and scatterings of qualifying phrases which make his prose draaaaaaaaaaag.

I was amused to see a review of this on Amazon in which someone basically says: This is a book about generals? And you chose 5 of them? And none of them was Patton?? Terrible book -- I won't read it! One star!
Some folks are just locked into a certain view of things. Personally, I've been collecting VDH Books for decades. Not a bad one yet.
