What is your favorite all time cover song? Some folks say a song can never be improved from the original presentation, but there are several cases I say disprove that theory.
Eddie Riff’s obscure 1956 side “Ain’t That Loving You Baby” recorded by Presley in 1958 before US Army called, one of his last rock’n’roll recordings, not released by RCA until 1964.

Bette Midler - Do You Want To Dance
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams
Beatles doing Isley Bros’ “Twist and Shout”— in my mind probably the greatest remake ever. John Lennon gave it the greatest rock vocal ever and absolutely made the song his own.
Unfortunately, K-RTH and oldies stations like that have ruined many great tunes. But it’s still the best scene in Ferris Bueller (which made it a huge hit again 20 years after it first hit).
I love a good cover. Here are some of my favorites:
“In the Midnight Hour” by Roxy Music (originally by Wilson Pickett)
“Prairie Rose” by Big Country (originally Roxy Music)
“The Seeker” by Rush (originally by The Who)
“Gimme Shelter” by Hawkwind (originally by The Rolling Stones)
“Every Little Thing” by Yes (originally by the Beatles)
“Then She Kissed Me” by The Derailers (”Then He Kissed Me” by Phil Spector/Ellie Greenwich)
“Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” by Dream Theater (originally by Elton John)
“Mack the Knife” by Brian Setzer (written by Weill/Brecht/Blitzstein)
Home--Peter Van Steeden (1931)Home--Rudee Vallee & His Connecticut Yankees (1932)
Anohter superb nomination! You’ll get no opposition on that, I’m sure.
Humble Pie - I Don’t Need No Doctor
The Nice - America
Cactus - Parchman Farm
Lee Michaels - Murder in My Heart for the Judge
Alan Jackson “Mercury Blues” (original by K.C. Douglas.)

Tennessee Waltz - Patti Page then Patsy Cline, Emmy Lou Harris, Leonard Cohen & Others.
The only song Steely Dan covered, Duke Ellington’s
“East St. Louis Toodle-Oo”
Sorry, Steve Miller’s version was better.
Johnny Cash - “Hurt.”
Originally recorded by Nine Inch Nails, written by Trent Reznor. After hearing Cash’s cover, Reznor said he owned it now.

Dream a Little Dream of Me--Wayne King & His Orchestra (1931)Dream a Little Dream of Me--Ozzie Nelson & His Orchestra (1931)
Lucille by the Everly Brothers. Not better than Little Richard’s original, but then, nothing ever is! Different and interesting.
